Half of the most-visited museums worldwide in 2022 were situated in the United Kingdom or the United States according to the most recent issue of the Theme Index and Museum Index report by the Themed Entertainment Association and researchers at AECOM. However, the Louvre remained at the top with 7.7 million annual visitors. The Parisian art museum, probably best known for housing da Vinci's Mona Lisa, has ranked first regarding attendance since the 2012 edition of the report started including museums, with one exception in 2016. Even with the overall visitor numbers recovering from the coronavirus pandemic dip, almost all top-ranking museums still struggle to reach pre-pandemic attendance numbers. For example, in 2019, 9.6 million people visited the Louvre. The 7.7-million figure from 2022 therefore represents a 20 percent decrease compared to the last year before the classification of COVID-19 as a pandemic, even though numbers increased by 173 percent between 2021 and 2022.

This phenomenon highlights the power of architecture not only as a functional structure but also as a catalyst for tourism, investment, and urban development. The Bilbao Effect underscores the potential of innovative design to reshape perceptions, attract visitors, and stimulate socio-economic growth, making it a fascinating subject for urban planners, architects, and policymakers alike. Could embracing this phenomenon opens doors to a future where architecture becomes a catalyst for inclusive growth? How do you think cities can leverage architectural landmarks to drive sustainable growth and community development in today's rapidly changing urban landscape?

Here’s the latest rankings of the top 20 most visited museums in Europe. With the Louvre and Vatican continuing to take the top 2 places, it’s brilliant to see the ongoing success of the UK museum sector- with 7 out of the top 20, and 3 of the top 6 in London alone. Hugely thriving, internationally renowned, and all the data still says that culture is the top draw to London for international visitors. Also particularly noteworthy is Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum- with the greatest individual yearly increase, a huge 53.1%. While this ranking is based on physical footfall, it would be particularly interesting to see new metrics emerge that also focus on wider engagement and impact, including digital and outreach. The world we live in is a hybrid one.

A realistic and rather thorough set of comments/suggestions from the perspective of the vast majority of museums — although small in size, they represent a large contribution to the cultural life of our nation. Often, these are hidden jewels that add to not only rural settings but major cities where their presence shines and preserves unique perspectives. The failure to address these inherent characteristics of small museums, may often result in tragic outcomes: https://lnkd.in/gEv2zW67

Are museums outdated? Are they really losing their attraction and their visitors in times of the digital revolution? We highly recommend the latest issue of the UNESCO Courier "Reimagining Museums". You will see that the opposite is actually the case. 👏 Of course, the digital transformation is changing many processes in museums behind the scenes as well as on the front stage. It’s a transformation of the visitor experience itself and it happens for good reasons. Museums need to fulfill their societal purpose, need to be inclusive and democratic and they need to adress the demands of the society and especially the younger and more tech-savy generation in order to keep up. But despite all these technological changes, one thing remains of great importance: The museum experience itself and the original work of art can only be truly experienced on site. Enjoy reading! 📖 #museospace #museums #museumvisit #reimaginingmuseums #digitaltransformation
🤔💭 Who still visits museums? You might be surprised but the number of museum-goers has been steadily rising over the years. While today’s technology offers a virtual glimpse into masterpieces, museums remain vibrant spaces for people to connect with the past. There’s something special about wandering through their halls. Don’t miss the latest issue of The UNESCO Courier and dive into the world of art and culture as we explore the connections and experiences these spaces offer: https://lnkd.in/eMRbTpXm

Merging the Digital & Artistic, Digital Transformation | Arts & Cultural heritage, E-Learning, Art Awards across Europe author
The Venice Biennale isn't just an art exhibition - it's a cultural phenomenon! Founded in 1895, it's transformed from a national showcase to a global platform for artistic dialogue. Imagine a world where art transcends borders and ignites conversations. The Biennale has been at the forefront of this artistic evolution, pushing boundaries and showcasing groundbreaking movements. From its early days celebrating Italian art to its current status as a global platform, the Biennale has consistently challenged the status quo. Venice itself becomes a living exhibition during the Biennale. The Giardini gardens, with their permanent pavilions and the central exhibition, are the heart of the event. But thr Biennale's magic extends beyond the Giardini's! National pavilions scattered throughout the city transform historic buildings into vibrant embassies for each country's artistic spirit. Independent exhibitions, known as "collateral events," further enrich the experience, offering a diverse range of artistic expressions. Are you an art enthousiast or simply curious about this unique event? The Venice Biennale offers a transformative experience for everyone. #VeniceBiennale #ArtHistory #ContemporaryArt #CulturalExchange #Travel
