The Evolution of the Business Lunch: From Medieval Feasts to Modern Meetings. The business lunch remains a key element of modern corporate culture. While not as boozy as in previous decades, they are still a way to buld relationships, seal deals and celebrate successes. But have you ever wondered about its origins? Let's take a brief journey through time to explore the fascinating history of the business lunch. Ancient Roots * In Roman and Greek times, business lunches were quite different from what we know today * These gatherings often took place in public spaces like forums or marketplaces * Here merchants and politicians would discuss deals over simple fare. Medieval Beginnings: Feasts and Negotiations * In medieval times, important business dealings often took place during elaborate feasts * These events served as a display of wealth and power, setting the stage for negotiations * The concept of "breaking bread" to build relationships and trust has deep historical roots The Coffee House Revolution * 17th century London saw the rise of coffee houses as centers of business and intellectual discourse * These establishments became known as "penny universities" due to the wealth of knowledge exchanged over a cup of coffee * Many modern financial institutions, such as Lloyd's of London, trace their origins to these early coffee house meetings The Industrial Revolution and the Birth of the Modern Business Lunch * As cities grew and commerce expanded, the need for dedicated spaces to conduct business over meals increased * The 19th century saw the emergence of gentleman's clubs and fine dining establishments catering to businessmen * The concept of the "power lunch" began to take shape, with deals being struck over multi-course meals The American Influence: Efficiency and Networking * In the early 20th century, American business practices began to influence UK corporate culture * The focus shifted towards more efficient, time-constrained lunches * Networking became a crucial aspect of these midday meetings, with relationships built over lighter fare The Modern Era: From Three-Martini Lunches to Health-Conscious Choices * The 1960s and 70s saw the height of the lavish business lunch, often accompanied by multiple cocktails * Recent decades have witnessed a shift towards healthier, more casual business lunches * Technology has changed the nature of these meetings, with virtual lunches becoming more common in the digital age As we look back on the rich history of the business lunch, it's clear that while the settings and customs may have changed, the fundamental purpose remains the same: to build relationships, exchange ideas, and drive business forward. What's your favorite aspect of the modern business lunch? #BusinessHistory #CorporateCulture #BusinessLunch

There’s no denying it: virtual meetings are efficient and enable us all to be more productive But is there really anything better than meeting in-person for coffee? Having candid chats in busy coffee shops is one of the best parts of my job But there are so many options in London It can be hard to know where is right for which occasion ▶ Will it be full of tourists? ▶ Will the music be too loud? ▶ Will there be anywhere to sit? ▶ Will the coffee taste like pond water? Here is a tiny list of my fave places in London to meet for a work coffee: ☕ WatchHouse Perfect for coffee lovers, Watchouse has many locations across central London but absolutely does not feel like a chain. I love this cafe for meeting candidates and clients (especially coffee snobs). Customer service is impeccable, the atmosphere is sophisticated but not stuffy, the coffee is exceedingly good, and the background buzz is just the right volume to drown out the specifics of a confidential chat. The food is also excellent. I’m especially fond of the Somerset House location (in fact, it inspired this post). ☕ PRUFROCK COFFEE LIMITED An independent cafe founded by coffee lovers, Prufrock sits inconspicuously halfway down Leather Lane in EC1 (home to one of the best street food markets in London). A stone’s throw from Farringdon station, this cafe is perfectly placed at the intersection of the City, the West End and Clerkenwell, making it a perfect spot to meet just before midday. The coffee is super high quality and the service is attentive but not overbearing. Get there 15 mins before your meeting as you might have to queue! ☕ Grind | Certified B Corp Founded in 2011, Shoreditch Grind was a mecca for tech nerds at the heart of ‘Silicon Roundabout.’ Grind now has cafes across London, a production coffee roastery and is a great place for an informal, energetic meeting. Great for meeting tech types who don’t mind quite a bit of background noise. ☕ Department Of Coffee and Social Affairs Soho has lots of options for meetings, but I love this spot for low-key meetings with coffee connoisseurs. Tucked just off Carnaby Street, this is a perfect destination for a confidential catch-up with a client or candidate. With just the right amount of seating, you’re unlikely to get caught without a table. A true hidden gem Redemption Roasters Founded in a prison to reduce reoffending rates, Redemption is a social enterprise presenting excellent coffee and helping-the-greater-good vibes. Their Bloomsbury and Islington locations have lots of seating perfect for casual candidate chats. I’m also fond of their Dulwich spot for weekend coffee and snacks with my kids 👨👩👧👦 In London, we are spoiled for choice I've barely scratched the surface here. What’s your favourite spot for a work coffee in London? Where is it and what occasion is it perfect for? "You might get a great deal on something you don't want." - Jason Fried I was recently listening to the Rework podcast, where Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson were discussing their company retreats and the importance of choosing the right venue. Many of us have been to events held in those generic Sheraton ballrooms — spaces that lack any sense of personality. But hopefully, you’ve also experienced a venue that was truly inspiring. Last summer, I attended a gala for the Momento Foundation (formerly Love Not Lost) at Barnsley Gardens. As soon as you step onto the property, you’re hit with this sense of peace and awe. The beautiful gardens, quaint buildings, and surrounding scenery start to put you at ease and you can feel your body relaxing. The event itself was beautiful and the stories they shared were inspiring, but I can guarantee it wouldn’t have felt the same in a stuffy hotel. This principle doesn’t just apply to venues, it applies to many of the decisions we make in business. Sure, you can go with the “cheaper” option or invest in something more substantial. Take software solutions, for example: Google Hangouts comes free with Google Workspace, but in many ways, Zoom offers a superior experience. We face similar choices when evaluating vendors. Do you always choose the cheapest option? Jason argues that there’s a cost beyond just dollars and cents. When it comes to something like a team retreat, paying less might actually work against your goal of inspiring and invigorating your team. And what about choosing a less expensive software development agency? Sure, you save upfront, but what happens if you end up spending way more time micromanaging and fixing mistakes? What if, in the end, you’re left with something that’s difficult to use or doesn’t actually solve your problem? You might have gotten a great deal, but on something you didn’t really want. Where have you experienced this in your business? Are there areas where going with the cheaper option actually cost you more in the long run?
