From Akello's coding dreams to Rahmet's burning desire to become a software engineer, the Tech Girls Drive is fueling a passion for tech in young girls across Africa! These are just a few stories of how the Tech Girls Drive, a program under the Women Techsters Initiative, drives advocacy for female inclusion in STEM at the grassroots. Through this program, we are empowering girls with digital literacy, showcasing the possibilities of STEM careers, and connecting them with crucial resources to fuel their learning journeys. A huge thank you to our dedicated Women Techsters beneficiaries, volunteers, and the entire Tech4Dev team! Over the past two years, they've all generously volunteered their time and knowledge to advocate for the introduction of STEM education to over 115,000 girls in secondary schools, religious centres and communities across 25 countries. Girls also love to chat (GPT) #Womenintech are rarer than they should be. Is it because most women are simply not interested in tech? Nothing could be further than the truth! I have run tech skilling programs for women-only and open-to-all cohorts and believe this: girls love tech as much as the boys, but learn it better in all-female environments. And they do even better when they see and speak with more female role models. We can reduce the #gendergapintech that much faster by creating more exclusive learning spaces and opportunities. And then… …we can let the boys in 😀 A few years back, we were running a coding workshop for kids from a local community organisation. There were 10 volunteers to help 20 primary-school students learn the basics of micro:bit coding. 10/10 volunteers: male AND 16/20 students: also male! Parents were dropping off the kids and one of the mothers approached me about how her daughter, who loved tinkering with tech toys at home, had been reluctant to attend this workshop. She had complained, “There will only be boys there!” and had to be coaxed into joining. The girl had perked up on seeing me in the crowd of male faces and the mother was grateful that I was a role model! I didn’t have the heart to tell her that… … I was program-managing and not a coder myself! BUT I played along—hoping that it would help at least one little girl to code freely. The incident got me thinking about why girls so young are shying away from expressing or pursuing their interests. We decided to intermittently spike our skilling programs with all-female cohorts to check for differences. Across programs for all age-groups. Primary school students, high schoolers, undergrads and even mid-career women. The results were always the same. 👭 Higher participation—many, many more women and girls. 🙌 Deeper engagement—more hands raised, more questions asked, more comments shared. ⚡️More energy—excited chatter about IoT applications, Python plug-ins and in recent times, AI and Gen AI use cases. We also realised that the learning outcomes and engagement further improved with more visible participation from female role models—volunteers, women leaders, speakers. Which is why we decided to do three things on a more regular basis. 1) Run more all-female cohorts 2) Showcase (normalise?) women’s passion for tech 3) Create communities of practice where learners could meet and engage with more women in tech. …in short, more women chatting and building each other up! I visited my secondary school today. It's Friday today, so when I got there, students were in their various club meetings. After school, the Press Club members were so happy to see me when they came downstairs! I used to be the president of the club back in school. They came to say hi, and (as usual) asked me for some ideas on how to make the club better, and soon I was talking to them about the Technovation Girls Challenge. Their excitement in this technology challenge was written all over their faces. But not even one of those four girls had a functioning laptop of her own. or even one that they could borrow. And having access to at least one laptop or desktop computer per Technovation team was essential, because it would be used for app development. That reality saddened them, and saddened me, too. But luckily, the school management was there to help. 👍🏾 . I strongly believe that this is where all our talk about gender diversity and inclusion in tech (and other fields with little female representation) are most important: at the grassroots. And by grassroots I mean in our primary and secondary schools, churches, and other units of socialization in our local communities. Some guys I've talked to about my beliefs always say: 'But no one is stopping women from coming into tech. You guys just don't have the interest.' And that's true. But why is that true? It's true because from positions as simple as class captains in primary school, girls are told that: 'they can only be assistant'. Meaning that there's only a certain level that we're ALLOWED to aspire to. But in today's world where intellect and capability are core determiners of worth, that's a wrong mindset to instill in girls, because we tend to grow with it and pass it on to other girls in our circle. . More grass root work, everyone. More grass root work. The only real way to create that breakthrough in inclusion is when we begin from those points when mindsets, dreams and ambitions are born, i.e., the grassroots. This year, among other things, I'm big on grass root work, and generally helping beginners find their way in the tech space. I'm thankful for the platforms I was invited to speak on last year, where I spoke especially for beginners: the Ctrl+Tech+Podcast and at the What's Next webinar, and am looking forward to more opportunities like that this year. Although it's only been a year since I REALLY found MY way in tech, I don't want to wait till I'm a 'professional professional' before I begin giving back the little I know in the small ways I can. 📊 Facts based on the data we have collected for 5+ years: 📉 Only 10% of the girls aged 7-11 years old can name a woman in STEM when they start their coding journey with The Lavender Spaceship Project. 📉 48% of girls aged 12-16 years old say they don’t know any and 20% mention Marie Curie. 😊 Interestingly we've also had answers ranging from “a Roblox programmer named AGirljennifer” to “My mom” (amazing!). 🔎 As you can see from the above data points, there is a notable gap around awareness of women role models among young girls. Efforts to highlight women in STEM fields are crucial to inspire young girls, in addition to teaching them how to code. 📌 That’s why we expose the girls to inspiring women in STEM systematically through our curriculum and we have made it one of the pillars of our girl-centric program. 💡 If the above resonates with you, I would appreciate your thoughts on how we can do better as a community to inspire more girls in coding and tech. #gendergapintech #inspiration #educationforgirls

There's a DEI Crisis in STEM. As a consultant who works primarily with tech clients, I’m deeply invested in the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Recently, the closures of key organizations like Girls in Tech, Women Who Code, and Code Nation have highlighted a silent crisis that we cannot ignore. These organizations were vital in providing support, mentorship, and resources to women and minorities in STEM. Their absence leaves a void that underscores the persistent challenges we face in achieving true diversity and inclusion. In my latest article, I delve into: • The systemic issues contributing to the shutdowns • The cultural and financial barriers women in STEM encounter • The broader implications of a lack of diversity in our industry I also discuss actionable steps we can take to support existing DEI initiatives and create a more inclusive environment.
