We have extended our #packaging targets with five commitments by 2030: ♻ Further reduction of plastics: METRO aims to reduce 10,000 tonnes of plastic in the plastic packaging of its own brands. ♻ Increase the amount of recycled material: The goal is to achieve 30% recycled plastic in own brand packaging. ♻ Elimination of substances of concern: Commitment to eliminate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) from all levels of Own Brand packaging. ♻ Packaging recyclability: 100% of private label packaging should be recyclable, reusable or compostable at home. ♻ Sustainable paper, cardboard and wood: Use certified materials (Forest Stewardship Council, FSC®; Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes, PEFC) or a minimum of 70% recycled content for all paper, cardboard, cartons and wood in own brand packaging. 🌿 Insights from the 2024 Planetary Health Alliance Summit: A Shift Towards Sustainable Packaging 🌍 Last week I lead a discussion on plastic pollution at Sunway University which led to a key realization: the traditional practice in Malaysia of using banana leaves to wrap food. This highlighted the options for a shift away from plastics in packaging. This shift is needed. However, it requires robust regulations for alternative packaging materials, especially in the food industry, to ensure their safety. Setting clear standards for composition, safety, and biodegradability is essential. Promoting research and development in sustainable packaging solutions is crucial. By fostering innovation and regulatory compliance, we can create a future where packaging is environmentally friendly and safe for consumers.
