‘Sony Research Award Program’ Now Accepting Applications to Enhance Emerging and Innovative Technological Development Sony Group Corporation announced a call for research proposals for the 2024 Sony Research Award Program.  The Sony Research Award Program is an open innovation initiative for universities and research institutions such as government research and nonprofit organizations in the U.S., Canada, Europe*1 and India. It provides sponsored research funding for projects on emerging and innovative technologies in collaboration with Sony Group’s own research groups. This year, the program will expand its research themes to include AI and content creation technology. Huawei Secretly Backs US Research, Awarding Millions in Prizes: Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant blacklisted by the US, is secretly funding cutting-edge research at American universities including Harvard through an independent Washington-based foundation. From a report: Huawei is the sole funder of a research competition that has awarded millions of dollars since its inception in 2022 and attracted hundreds of proposals from scientists around the world, including those at top US universities that have banned their researchers from working with the company, according to documents and people familiar with the matter. The competition is administered by the Optica Foundation, an arm of the nonprofit professional society Optica, whose members' research on light underpins technologies such as communications, biomedical diagnostics and lasers. The foundation "shall not be required to designate Huawei as the funding source or program sponsor" of the competition and "the existence and content of this Agreement and the relationship between the Parties shall also be considered Confidential Information," says a nonpublic document reviewed by Bloomberg. The findings reveal one strategy Shenzhen, China-based Huawei is using to remain at the forefront of funding international research despite a web of US restrictions imposed over the past several years in response to concerns that its technology could be used by Beijing as a spy tool. It is anticipated that the identification of robust #dBMs in this study will have a favourable impact on the #Parkinson's disease community in the future by enabling the daily-life detection and monitoring of #PD symptoms, including the early signs of the disease, such as REM behaviour disorder (RBD). The Joint Declaration of Intent commits both nations to broadening and deepening their science and research links, with a focus on areas such as quantum, AI, clean technology, and research security. An absolutely fantastic year for Electronics and Electrical Engineering in the University of Edinburgh School of Engineering, with staff involved in four new CDTs in addition to two previously announced UKRI AI CDTs. The 6 CDTs span ALL areas of EEE teaching and research including: (i) Offshore Renewable Energy; (ii) Sensing and Processing for Defence and Security; (iii) Deployable and Dependable AI for Robotics; (iv) Use-Inspired Photonic Sensing & Metrology, (v) Quantum Informatics, and (vi) Biomedical Innovation. This builds on the recent EPSRC investment of £24M in two new AI research hubs focussing on electronics and healthcare. These exciting initiatives will provide opportunities for taught and research students, new post-doctoral research fellows, and current and future staff. EPSRC have (after months of embargo) announced their list of which Centres of Doctoral Training they decided to fund for the next 5 years. This is a significant investment in PhD-level engineering & physical sciences training in the UK. It seems that the funding has ended up being pretty tightly focused in the theme areas, maybe not surprisingly given that the number of funded CDTs fell from 75 in the 2018/19 round to 65 this time (due to increased costs of PhDs without matching uplift of the pot EPSRC had for this). From a geospatial industry perspective, the sad omission is the re-funding of the Geospatial Systems CDT run by Newcastle and Nottingham unis, a lost opportunity to continue this fundamental investment in people and research for our sector in the UK. However I’d point to the successes of firstly City & Warwick unis with the DIVERSE CDT - diversity in visualisation has some interesting relevance in geospatial data visualisation, especially through the giCentre team including Jo Wood, jason dykes, Aidan Slingsby. Also, the FIBE CDT at Cambridge Uni led by Abir Al-Tabbaa contains many geospatial angles relating to future construction practices. There are similarly geospatial touch points in a number of the other CDTs’ topics. Finally, I’m intrigued by the CDT in “Diversity led, mission-driven research” at Glasgow uni.!
