‘Sony Research Award Program’ Now Accepting Applications to Enhance Emerging and Innovative Technological Development Sony Group Corporation announced a call for research proposals for the 2024 Sony Research Award Program.  The Sony Research Award Program is an open innovation initiative for universities and research institutions such as government research and nonprofit organizations in the U.S., Canada, Europe*1 and India. It provides sponsored research funding for projects on emerging and innovative technologies in collaboration with Sony Group’s own research groups. This year, the program will expand its research themes to include AI and content creation technology. I am thrilled to extend my congratulations to our esteemed colleagues, Professor Francesca Toni, Professor Cristian Cadar, Dr. Rodrigo Ledesma Amaro, and Professor Rylie Green, who have each been awarded prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants. This recognition is a significant achievement and a testament to the groundbreaking work being done across Imperial College London. -Professor Francesca Toni will be advancing research in AI ethics, ensuring that as we develop more sophisticated technologies, we also prioritise fairness and transparency. -Professor Cristian Cadar will be leading efforts to enhance software security, a critical area in our increasingly digital world. -Dr Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro, PhD will be pushing the boundaries of sustainable biomanufacturing, a field that holds immense potential for developing eco-friendly processes and products. -Professor Rylie Green will continue her pioneering work in developing advanced biomaterials that could revolutionise healthcare treatments and improve patient outcomes. Nobel Prizes While these prizes give highlights on scientific inventions and inventors that made an impact, if you carefully look at these, it becomes more and more apparent that the real heroes of the story are never appreciated. Who are these - these are thousands of engineers, businesses and technicians who made sense of these ideas and made it real. Theory and ideas are the easiest part of the puzzle. The hardest is to make sense of it, and make it happen in real life. There is a paramount difference between those. Looks like it's more about rebranding on what you say - and how you say it that makes a good fit with the award themes. Anything practically can be made a fit into science, from mind to machines - just tell a good story and we are there. Another curious thing to note is many of the winners of prizes are seen soon as some kind of super humans, which they are not by far by any means. Everyone immediately engages in playing the gimmicks of romanticising the idea of prizes beyond what it really tells about the individuals or the idea themselves is. And many winners also try to take advantage of these, through further funding or other things, going beyond the merit of things, and those based on perceptions. While we appreciate a society giving awards for a variety of reasons, we also need to understand that it's not that specific individuals that matter alone, it's the ideas that shaped the future that matters more, and the often the network of humans around. And every one of those ideas to lead to a certain level of practical conclusion and use needs much more brilliance than where the idea in its crude form existed. Commenting on this year's awards - it's weird. Bio inspiration and physical inspiration - I can connect anything for that matter. It just went about killing the fun part of science we know it in lab and physical experiments. Impact wise surely AI is helping data processing across fields..probably having a category of Nobel prize in informatics and engineering may have been more appropriate. Appreciate the awards. Leave the hype and focus on the real stuff.

🌟 New Report 🌟 Chinese scientists at top-tier universities, state labs, and technology companies are conducting state-of-the-art research in invasive and non-invasive brain-computer interfaces, as shown in our new bibliometric study. Besides medical uses, China’s BCI research aims at enhancing human cognitive potential and merging natural and artificial intelligence. China’s BCI research is largely indigenous and shows relatively few foreign dependencies.     Our report, authored in collaboration with researchers from the Department of War Studies at King's College London uses bibliometric analysis and expert assessment of technical documents to evaluate China’s BCI, and concludes that the research is on track to achieve its targets.
