📢 [Announcement] 📢   Exercise your vote for Malayan Tigers!   Malaysian Conservation Alliance For Tigers (MYCAT)’s tiger conservation project has been shortlisted for funding of up to €60,000 from the EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association – and it’s the only project in Asia, out of 8 international nominees. The project with the highest number of public votes will receive funding.    Securing this win and additional funding will help MYCAT increase anti-poaching and anti-deforestation patrols conducted by local and indigenous community rangers and CAT walkers by five-fold. MYCAT started CAT (Citizen Action for Tigers) walks in 2010, and it is the only tiger conservation project in the world that involves citizen conservationists in patrols to record threats to wildlife, disarm snares and traps, and help restore degraded land through reforestation efforts. More funding will also mean support for the planting of 5,000 trees and maintenance of another 15,000 trees.   The 4,000 hectare Yu River Corridor in central Peninsular Malaysia is a lifeline for endangered wildlife, including the Malayan Tiger, which faces threats from poaching and habitat loss. We’d value your input on our draft Marine Conservation Advice Packages for two new Marine Protected Areas in English waters. These are: 🌊 Yarmouth to Cowes Marine Conservation Zone – this 16km2 site on the north-west coast of the Isle of Wight is home to many important species such as native oysters. It comprises a variety of habitats from rocky seabed to soft sediment and is one of the best examples of a ‘peat and clay’ exposure in the region which was submerged 8,000 years ago. 🌊 Inner Bank Marine Conservation Zone – situated off the south coast of England, 10km south of Dungeness into the English Channel, this site has a large variety of subtidal fine to coarse sediments. These varied seabed habitats support high levels of biodiversity including native oysters, anemones, sea cucumbers, starfish and urchins. Marine Conservation Zones protect typical, rare or declining habitats and species found in our seas. Together with other types of Marine Protected Areas they contribute to the National Site Network. We are proud to announce our 5th nature-based solution partner, Barena Association, who are dedicated to preserving the Northern Venetian Lagoon, its unique wetland environment, fauna and flora, and Indigenous culture and traditions.    The unique habitats of the Northern Venetian Lagoon are rapidly disappearing, primarily as a result of human impact. Barena Association’s main project is called SOS Barena, protecting and restoring sections of the salt marshes (known locally as “Barene”).    TreadRight’s grant will be used to construct a barrier up to 150 meters long, along the salt marshes’ edge, filling it with mud, then allowing for native vegetation to take root there to continue to act as a natural, long-term barrier to erosion. The ocean is a large carbon sink, and huge volumes of carbon are stored at the interchange between land and sea – on the coast. Coastal wetland ecosystems like salt marshes, mangroves, and seagrasses absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store it as carbon in soil and underwater sediment. In the long term, these blue carbon ecosystems can store up to five times as much carbon as tropical forests. To offset part (10%) of our emissions last year, we have funded removing 6 tCO2e via the Blue Carbon ecosystem via Ecologi https://lnkd.in/e45Cend4

In the serene waters of Chichester Harbour, England, a novel approach to conservation has taken flight, offering a beacon of hope for coastal birds amidst the challenges of climate change and development. With the coastline increasingly under threat from storms and rising tides, the natural nesting grounds for terns—a graceful and vital bird species—have become perilously scarce. Responding to this urgent need, a dedicated team has ingeniously designed floating nesting rafts that adapt with the ocean's ebb and flow, providing a safe haven for terns to lay their eggs away from the encroaching waters. But the innovation didn't stop there. Recognizing the terns' hesitancy to adopt these artificial islands, the team introduced a community of decoy birds to the rafts 🐦➕🐧. These fake terns, standing as silent sentinels, created an illusion of safety and community, enticing the real birds to join and establish their nests. The presence of these decoys has sparked a remarkable change: real terns, drawn to the perceived safety and company of their faux counterparts, have begun to roost and reproduce on the rafts, leading to an increase in baby terns and a rejuvenation of their population within the harbour. This successful intervention at Chichester Harbour, marked by creativity and empathy, not only highlights the resilience of nature but also showcases the impact of human ingenuity in conservation. The use of floating nesting rafts and decoy birds illustrates one of the strategies for communities worldwide to encourage the growth and preservation of their local bird populations. By embracing such creative solutions, we can ensure that the delicate balance of our coastal ecosystems is preserved, allowing future generations to witness the beauty and diversity of life that thrives at the water's edge 🌎❤️. The process of returning land, resources, and cultural heritage to Indigenous communities brings numerous benefits, including supporting the conservation of lands for climate resilience and biodiversity. We’re working with the Penobscot Nation to return about 30,000 acres located within the heart of the Nation’s ancestral hunting and fishing territories, known as Wáhsehtəkʷ. Grassland communities help to promote diversity through many wildlife and ecological benefits, but these corridors of native meadows have disappeared over the decades. That is why LandStudies has worked to create hundreds of acres of these biodiverse upland and wetland communities over the last 30 years. Our restoration approach looks to expose existing and bring back degraded wetland corridors through legacy sediment removal. When the soil is removed, the ecological benefits of these communities are restored and often the exposed latent seed bed, buried under layers of sediment, starts growing.
