Donella Meadows offers what I think is probably one of the best discussions on systems change. She argues that systems are organized around core missions and purposes, and until that core changes, the system doesn’t change. So any new tech introduced, for example, is either assimilated, adapted such that it supports the core mission or purpose, or ejected because it doesn’t. Using this lens, one might begin to ask what we can tell about a system’s core mission or purpose based on what it enfolds, on what it adapts - and how, and what it endeavors to reject (not just tech but any manner of innovation or change). If you aren’t familiar with it, her book is Thinking in Systems: A Primer. And while technical in nature (she was definitely cut from the MIT engineering cloth), I think it should be essential reading. (And PS I’d love to do an adaptation of it to educational systems.
