How can sustainability initiatives also be just? How can these initiatives do well and continue bringing benefits to people and our planet? 🌏 🙌 As someone who is curious about the 'How' of things, it was very fulfilling to collaborate with Jakob Kramer and Philipp Späth on our recently published article: "Urban governance arrangements for sustainability and justice – linking theory with experience" ✍ https://lnkd.in/e9eKPHXE We analysed 10 local initiatives for sustainability and justice and found 6️⃣ governance arrangements made them work! 🙏 Thanks to ICLEI Europe 's Sophia Silverton for sharing this academic article on "Urban governance arrangements for sustainability and justice – linking theory with experience" 😍 🌊 The policy recommendations (see below) are fully in line with ECOLISE's (European network for community-led initiatives on climate change and sustainability) insights on how to harness the power of community: Read more on this in the 📕 Time for collective action Manifesto https://lnkd.in/dMxSAk4w ✍ & please sign to show your support ❣ 💪 😍 Local governments & community-led initiatives are the dream team for #localisation and improvement of a socio-ecological #EuropeanGreenDeal quote from the article: "Policy and practice recommendations 👉 1. Set up and continuously support a network of community initiatives who work on sustainability and justice issues 👉 2. Support local initiatives which contribute to a stronger culture of public engagement and your city’s wider vision 👉 3. Provide fewer-strings-attached funding options for local initiatives to 'increase flexibility to experiment' 👉 4. Create ‘bridging’ platforms for local initiatives to use (e.g., open community spaces, interactive web forums)" cc Duncan Crowley Laurence Modrego Matteo Zampatti Amelie Krug ❅Maria Nikolopoulou Eamon O'Hara Pauliina Helle Inés Elvira Sara Machado de Sousa Matthew Bach

Please join our CityTalk live session on how we can unify natural assets with housing needs. Thanks to the #CanadianUrbanInstitute for sponsoring this important issue. As I noted in my book on Dockside Green: The Story of the Most Sustainable Development in the World (https://lnkd.in/gGvKTjWR), sustainability is not about "either or" it's "and". Let's discuss the "and"!

It was great to be a part of the conversation discussing such an existential threat and what the construction industry must do to become part of the solution, rather than contributing to the problem. I hope it was insightful to hear Khansaheb Civil Engineering have done and are doing, and I think we have demonstrated what can be achieved if we measure performance, incentivse management teams, and make incremental changes. #sustainability24 #UrbanPlanning #SustainabilityInnovationForum2024 Construction Business News Middle East

An alliance of international green building entities has unveiled an initiative aimed at broadening the reach of sustainable finance within the global building industry. Among these organisations is the BUILDING RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT LIMITED, a UK-based building science centre, which hoped to bridge the investment gap between high-performing green buildings and their less sustainable counterparts. This influential coalition's report reveals a concerning statistic: about 75% of existing buildings fall short on sustainable practices. "To me, sustainability means balancing economic, social, and environmental value and understanding their interrelation. More than half of all economic activity is highly dependent on nature and its services. We must become more conscious of our actions and their impacts." — Christina Haupt Toft Christina Haupt Toft is the founder of Circle Consulting, a consultancy that integrates construction and biodiversity to benefit businesses and society. With 15 years of experience in finance and construction, Christina has focused the last five on sustainability and biodiversity in the built environment. Among her achievements is the development of a national method for city nature mapping in extensive collaboration within the industry, including ConTech Lab - en del af Molio. Addressing sustainability challenges in the built environment, Christina highlights the complexity and the novelty of incorporating nature-focused approaches in traditional economic sectors. She emphasises the pivotal role of financial institutions in driving sustainability by incentivising nature-positive assets and discusses the need for innovative construction materials and methods in response to raw material scarcity. 👉 Read the full article on our Journal: https://lnkd.in/ep_6ikNN

Incorporating sustainability into land development practices involves considering various aspects beyond just the physical structures built on the land. Here's how Alinea has included sustainability in our practices, using our Waterdown Bay development as an example: 🌿 Preservation of Natural Features: We preserved and enhanced natural features across 66 acres of open space, protecting trees, wetlands, and natural habitats to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem health. 🌿 Creation of Green Spaces: Our 16 acres of public parks provide recreational spaces for residents, promoting well-being while helping mitigate urban heat, improve air quality, and reduce stormwater runoff. 🌿 Stormwater Management Ponds: 18.25 acres of stormwater management ponds help control and store runoff, reducing flooding risks and improving water quality. Efficient Land Use Planning: Our efficient use of 310.5 acres minimizes urban sprawl while promoting walkability and reducing car reliance through a compact, mixed-use design. Through these sustainability practices at Waterdown Bay, Alinea enhances the quality of life for residents while contributing to the area's long-term environmental health and resilience.
