This sets a new benchmark for managing psychological risk following the publication of ISO 45003 back in 2021, which first put a spotlight on psychological wellbeing in the health and safety arena. *** TRUE OR FALSE?*** What do you think? The answer is actually false. (Btw, I’m talking psychoSOCIAL safety, not psychoLOGICAL safety which, by now, people should know isn’t what the WHS legislation refers to). Under Australian Work Health and Safety legislation, organisations are required to manage psychosocial risks in the workplace. The legislation doesn’t explicitly state that organisations (PCBUs) must create psychological health and safety (psychosocial safety for short) as a standalone requirement. Rather, it focuses on managing psychosocial risks as part of the broader duty to ensure health and safety in the workplace. That is: 1. Identify psychosocial hazards 2. Risk assess these hazards 3. Implement controls to mitigate these risks. 4. Evaluate the effectiveness of these controls. So the legislation is framed more around risk management and duty of care. Why am I raising this, because with limited resources, prioritize what you are spending your money and effort on. Be aware of being sold something that is going to “make you complaint” when it may not. Of course this is not just about compliance but it would be unwise to not work out what is hurting your people before throwing a bunch of stuff at them in the interest of “creating psychosocial safety”. Thousands of businesses and organisations across Europe are asked to respond to a questionnaire that focuses on: General safety and health risks in the workplace and how they are managed Psychosocial risks, such as stress, bullying and harassment Drivers of and barriers to OSH management Worker participation in safety and health practices.

There is so much truth to this statement. This is where the business case for psychological safety shines clearly - the need to prioritize psychological safety, the need to measure and monitor it.
