Sopra Steria has sold most of its Sopra Banking Software operations to sister company Axway. It also reduced its Axway stake from 32% to 11% and received €411m in proceeds. Several thoughts: ● The transaction simplifies Sopra Steria's business model by reducing the share of its software products. Software product businesses have different investment priorities and seasonality patterns. With Sopra Steria now closer to an #ITservices pure-play model, the number of IT services firms with a significant product business has declined: Atos is selling its products, too. Tietoevry was going to sell Tietoevry Banking now but will do it later. I can only think of CGI and HCLTech that consider software products as a strategic part of their portfolio mix ● The transaction also lowers Sopra Steria's net debt, which had grown last year with the acquisition of Ordina a Sopra Steria Company in the Netherlands. NelsonHall estimates Sopra Steria's net debt at the end of 2024 will be €300-400m, well under control, allowing some financial flexibility.

These banks cover for more than 50% of the Norwegian banking market. “We have a highly ambitious agenda for our lending business in Tietoevry Banking with a commitment to help Tier 1 and Tier 2 banks to modernize their legacy solutions. The agenda is pursued in parallel with our ongoing project engagements, where our aim is to facilitate the transition from an old mainframe solution with all challenges such as a limited integration platform, documentation and expertise. The biggest challenge in Banking implementations is to redevelop what was developed previously in the last 10 years in the next 6 months. 10 years is the normal time taken to replace legacy systems but the client specific enhancements which were done in the past 10 years in the legacy system are required to be replicated in the new system that will be replacing the legacy system and that is the biggest challenge as we do not have the luxury of time to do this.
