This is an exciting new article from Child Development Perspectives, co-authored by Joan Lombardi, SCEC Senior Advisor: A Global Call for Two-Generation Approaches to Child Development and Caregivers' Livelihoods (Sommer, Franchett, Yoshikawa & Lombardi, 2024) The authors' scoping review of global, multi-generation programs considers the mechanisms at work in these approaches and makes these key points: • Research on the specific interplay between adult- and child-centered services should be further explored: how do programs designed with the whole family in mind impact the development of children in those families? • The policy context must also be supportive of the communities served by these programs in order to sustain them and enhance the lives of children. Extreme heat is impacting child care centers across the country, putting young children at risk. As temperatures rise, outdoor playtime becomes limited, and indoor conditions can become uncomfortable. This challenge is making it harder for centers to provide safe, engaging environments for early learning. Every experience a child has, whether good or bad, shapes their future. Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) come from safe, stable, and loving relationships that make children feel secure and valued. This helps mitigate the harmful effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which can affect a child's health and well-being over time. Parents, caregivers, relatives, teachers, community members, and neighbors all play a role in creating environments where children feel safe and cared for. The more PCEs a child experiences, the more likely they are to stay healthy and bounce back from challenges. PCA America is working to ensure children, parents, and caregivers have to access comprehensive family supports that promote economic stability and contribute to PCEs.
