With 20+ years of experience in the field of mental health, I developed the concept and model of Mental Health Without Borders CAMPsites™ in 2017 to address a systemic shift that I felt was deeply needed. To increase public access to mental health professionals and cultural wellness practioners for free, no fees or insurance. Why am I passionate about this? As a survivor of complex traumas and violence growing up in the 1980's -90's there wasn't much available for accessible mental health resources + services, and especially for single parent households. What did exist was mostly private pay (specialty) services that for single moms like mine, victim of chronic intimate partner and domestic violence, addictions, and who worked multiple jobs while trying to get by on food stamps, simply would never be able to afford for herself or us. Although much has changed over the last 30+ years in regards to what we know about mental health and creating more services for kids and families, there are some things that haven't changed. These critical life saving services remain mostly within four walls of care that have overwhelmed caseloads + wait lists, stressed professionals trying their best to keep up with demands, co-pays, insurance, accessibility issues. We do this for free, it's confidential, we eliminate some of the barriers to help seeking though going to spaces where we can outreach most including community events, schools, churches, outside of grocery stores. We connect with parents/caregivers, kids, teens, Elders. We hold space with survivors of suicide, homicide, and complex grief. We offer a moment of respite and genuine care to all that stop by our booths. Our first CAMPsites™ started with just me at community events and grew as I on-boarded student interns and eventually built a team. Together we invest in a new way to bring providers outside of four walls of care and into community spaces where they are needed. CAMPsites™ are a warm support ❤️ and serve as a way to increase access to trained professionals who can offer resources, referrals, and teach immediate sensory and trauma-informed care techniques and strategies for improving health and reducing acute stress. At CAMPsites™ we offer therapeutic care and culturally responsive services. CAMPsites™ are not a replacement to clinical therapy services. They serve as a actionable resource and relational bridge to connecting with counselors, social workers, occupational therapist's, community health workers, victim advocates, and health professionals. Those who support our CAMPsites™ are either our HIR team members, student interns, or trained volunteers. I am so proud of the Symphony Talent team for their commitment and engagement in our mental health recognition week. It's great to see our teams come together, share stories, go for walks during their meetings, and generally come together to celebrate the importance of mental health. As we all know, mental health is fundamental to our overall health and wellbeing. Yet, it is easy to neglect, especially in today's fast-paced society where we manage multiple roles and responsibilities. This is something I am mindful of for myself and those around me. If you're someone who has a VI friend or family member we'd love to hear from you (and if you're VI yourself, please pass this on to your friends and family!). Following the successful launch of our Wellbeing Service in January 2023, we have been able to support our members to manage their mental health through talking therapy with our in-house counsellor David. Although we still have 12 months of funding remaining, we are already starting to think about our next application for continued funding, and how we might be able to expand the service to help even more people. As such, we are gathering data to help us decide how we might do this. In the past year, it has become evident that family and friends of people living with VI might also benefit from some dedicated wellbeing support, and we’d really appreciate feedback from those loved ones.
