If you’ve been through trauma, you may have trouble seeing and accepting your own needs for good self-care because: * You don’t like to bring attention to yourself, as your inner world has been painfully overwhelming, or being seen by others was risky or dangerous. * You don’t know how to trust attention from others because historically, attention has been abusive or negative. * Your tolerance for pain and discomfort is high. Nurturing your connections with loved ones, joining a social group, or volunteering for something you care about is helpful to feel active and connected. Embracing movement through walks, yoga, or dancing also benefits both body and mind. Challenging yourself with brain teasers, exploring a new hobby, or learning something new helps to keep the mind sharp. When you have trauma that has been there for years, it can be a struggle for you to differentiate between who someone is in relation to you, and the way they have been treating you. On this Self-Care Saturday… What person, place, or thing makes you feel better just by being around them? For me, the beach surrounded by nothing but nature on an unbusy day is that place. Recently, I’ve been planning for a trip. All of the planning had to take priority. That meant at least a month of missed beach days. Yesterday I was able to get back to my place.
