Salesforce's technology empowers thousands with disabilities to be self-reliant and support their families. Together with Salesforce and The Blind Institute of Technology, we underscored the importance of a diverse workforce, promoted tech accessibility, and championed inclusivity as a tech solution. Such a brilliant first day at #Engage2024, some of the things I’ll be thinking about & taking away from today: - what does excellence really mean, and who gets to decide? - how do we de-centre institutions and instead centre the voices of those with lived experience? - what do we define as evidence, and how can this be inclusive of everyone (The Patient Experience Library has a great paper on this)? - disabled people make up 24% of the UK population, and yet are massively underrepresented in our media and places of work, because they are ableist and inaccessible. How can we transform our environments and institutions to embrace the social model of disability and ensure that we include everyone?

In today's digital landscape, ensuring accessibility isn't just a compliance issue—it's a strategic imperative. As highlighted by leaders like Stephen Framil and Jim Fox, engaging stakeholders from the top down is crucial. Executive buy-in often trickles down to other areas, facilitating a culture of accessibility across the organization. Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRGs) such as Merck's Disability and Inclusion Strategy Council are pivotal in shaping and advancing accessibility initiatives, making digital inclusivity a tangible and integral part of the business. Relatability is key in securing leadership support for accessibility initiatives. When leaders connect personally with the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, they are more likely to champion comprehensive accessibility efforts. Using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as a framework provides a solid foundation, but it’s the ownership and proactive management across departments that truly drive meaningful change. Universal design further strengthens these efforts by enhancing user experience and mitigating potential cybersecurity risks. Accessibility is not just a moral obligation but a smart business strategy. Companies prioritizing accessibility not only comply with standards but also enhance their global reach and customer satisfaction.
