I'm happy to be able to share this recent publication from the SEISMIC group and a whole bunch of talented researchers titled “Systemic Advantage Has a Meaningful Relationship with Grade Outcomes in Students' Early STEM Courses at Six Research Universities”. It was published in the International Journal of STEM Education as an open access article. It introduces the Systemic Advantage Index which is a simplified way to understand how students with more advantage tend to get higher grades in courses. The 2024 State of U.S. Science & Engineering Report is out! According to the report, "Americans’ degree of trust in scientists has remained high for decades, although it varies by level of education and has fluctuated in recent years. In 2022, 42% of adults with postgraduate degrees expressed a great deal of confidence in scientists to act in the best interests of the public, compared to only 32% of adults with a college degree and 21% of adults with a high school diploma expressing a great deal of confidence in scientists to act in the best interests of the public." How can afterschool STEM programs offer communities unique entry points for scientific understanding, avenues for building trust, and nurturing a robust generation of scientists and civically engaged citizens that bridge divides? June 6 webinar: Join National Science Foundation (NSF) program directors from the Division of Research, Innovation, Synergies and Education (RISE) in the Directorate for #Geosciences (GEO) regarding the new Focus on Recruiting Emerging #Climate and Adaptation Scientists and Transformers (FORECAST) program (NSF 24-558) in a virtual webinar to learn more about this new opportunity. The FORECAST program seeks to facilitate transitions from status-quo graduate career preparation to student-centered models with an emphasis on building entrepreneurial and innovation capacity through intentional professional development activities. Focused on developing cohorts of innovative scholars from emerging research institutions (ERIs) and groups historically excluded in STEM, FORECAST should help develop STEM talent adept in community resilience and the translation of research outcomes for societal benefits.
