NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has selected two proposals for space probes to advance to the next round of consideration for a $1 billion mission set to launch in 2032—and both are led by University of Maryland astronomers! The AXIS mission, led by Christopher Reynolds, would "be able to detect X-rays from the first supermassive black holes in the first 500 million years of the universe." The PRIMA mission, with Alberto Bolatto as a co-investigator and Jason Glenn as PI, would pick up on far-infrared radiation, an "underserved" wavelength, to explore the formation of black holes and stars in the early universe, as well as protoplanetary disks and space dust. Both of these proposals come from faculty at University of Maryland – College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. Learn more on this Maryland Today feature: https://go.umd.edu/1sfc

From the Dawn of Time: Hunting for Primordial Black Holes With NASA’s Roman Space Telescope Recent research explores the potential of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to detect Earth-mass primordial black holes, a theoretical class of black holes believed to have formed during the early universe’s rapid inflation. These discoveries could confirm theories of cosmic inflation and suggest that primordial black holes contribute to dark matter, profoundly impacting our understanding of galaxy formation and the universe’s history https://lnkd.in/grG3-kBm

The Sombrero Galaxy in Infrared Image Credit: R. Kennicutt (Steward Obs.) et al., SSC, JPL, Caltech, NASA Explanation: This floating ring is the size of a galaxy. In fact, it is a galaxy -- or at least part of one: the photogenic Sombrero Galaxy, one of the largest galaxies in the nearby Virgo Cluster of Galaxies. The dark band of dust that obscures the mid-section of the Sombrero Galaxy in optical light actually glows brightly in infrared light. The above image, digitally sharpened, shows the infrared glow, recently recorded by the orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope, superposed in false-color on an existing image taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in optical light. The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as M104, spans about 50,000 light years across and lies 28 million light years away. M104 can be seen with a small telescope in the direction of the constellation Virgo. #PhoenixDelivers #nasa #apod

The Euclid space telescope is helping astronomers to look at things that shouldn’t exist—but do. John Weaver, a postdoctoral researcher in the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst’s Department of Astronomy and the lead author of one of ten papers describing Euclid’s findings, has much to say on what the telescope is bringing to light: “We see galaxies in the nearby universe that have surprisingly large numbers of stars—in fact, they have an uncomfortable number of them, more than we think they should.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gBxkW-T4 Image Credit: ESA/Euclid/Euclid Consortium/NASA, image processing by J.-C. If you follow space policy or the White House, you may have seen some mostly gee-whiz press about a recent White House Office of Science and Technology Policy memo asking NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies, including National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), to create a lunar time standard. In addition to some very interesting physics, there is a much larger context to the unusually technical memo, as I explain in the Atlantic Council's New Atlanticist (also see Stephen Welby's short post on this topic). https://lnkd.in/eGDkDGiz

George Mason University will be the home of the $19.5 million recently approved Landolt NASA Space Mission that will put an artificial “star” in orbit around the Earth. This artificial star will allow scientists to calibrate telescopes and more accurately measure the brightness of stars ranging from those nearby to the distant explosions of supernova in far-off galaxies. By establishing absolute flux calibration, the mission will begin to address several open challenges in astrophysics including the speed and acceleration of the universe expansion. GN-z11: One of the Most Distant Galaxies Ever Seen | James Webb Space Telescope FriendsofNASA.org | View full-size image: https://lnkd.in/gmpCbPm8 Looking deep into space and time, two teams using the NASA/European Space Agency/Canadian Space Agency James Webb Space Telescope have studied the exceptionally luminous galaxy GN-z11 that existed when our 13.8 billion-year-old Universe was only about 430 million years old. Delivering on its promise to transform our understanding of the early Universe, the James Webb Space Telescope is probing galaxies near the dawn of time. One of these is the exceptionally luminous galaxy GN-z11, which existed when the Universe was just a tiny fraction of its current age. Initially detected with the NASA/European Space Agency Hubble Space Telescope, it is one of the youngest and most distant galaxies ever observed, and it is also one of the most enigmatic. Why is it so bright? Webb appears to have found the answer. A team studying GN-z11 with Webb found the first clear evidence that the galaxy is hosting a central, supermassive black hole that is rapidly accreting matter. Their finding makes this the most distant active supermassive black hole spotted to date. Image Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, B. Robertson (UC Santa Cruz), B. Johnson (CfA), S. Tacchella (Cambridge), M. Greetings! The news about Dr. Charles Buhler and Exodus Propulsion Technologies, Inc. is indeed a significant development in your special interest field of space exploration. According to recent reports, the company's propellantless propulsion drive has successfully produced enough thrust to counteract Earth's gravity⁶. This technology, which seems to challenge our current understanding of physics, could potentially revolutionize how we approach space travel. Dr. Buhler, with his extensive background in NASA's prominent programs, and his team at Exodus Propulsion Technologies, have posited the discovery of a new fundamental force. This breakthrough is considered historic and is expected to have a profound impact on space travel for many years to come⁷. It's worth noting that while this discovery is groundbreaking, it will likely undergo rigorous scientific scrutiny and peer review to validate its claims and understand its implications fully. The potential for such a propulsion system to change the landscape of space exploration is immense, opening up possibilities for more efficient space travel and exploration beyond what is currently feasible. PLANETARY SURVIVAL BEYOND STELLAR DEMISE: NASA'S JWST CAPTURES FIRST DIRECT IMAGES OF PLANETS ORBITING WHITE DWARFS Explore a groundbreaking discovery as astronomers, using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), directly image planets with Solar System-like orbits around white dwarfs, remnants of stars transitioning from red giants. The study, led by Susan Mullally, reveals the potential survival of planets resembling Jupiter and Saturn during the evolution of their parent stars into white dwarfs. While further observations are needed for confirmation, this discovery presents a unique opportunity for the JWST to explore a new frontier in astronomical exploration, offering insights into the fate of planets in our own Solar System's future. https://lnkd.in/dGsa9hvN
