Education is the key to unlocking a better future. Sinclair's "Returning Citizen Initiative" program has helped over 1,800 incarcerated individuals earn degrees and certificates in the last five years. This education and training program provides valuable #opportunities to those looking to re-enter the workforce while also helping to reduce prison recidivism. #secondchances #workforcedevelopment #resilience

A report from the RAND Corporation* found that “inmates who participate in correctional education programs had a 43% lower odds of recidivating than those who did not. This translates to a 13% percentage point reduction in the risk of recidivating.” This stat illustrates why it was an honor for Kindros to partner with the Tufts University Prison Initiative of Tisch College (TUPIT) to provide formerly incarcerated people with the Financial Building Blocks® platform. TUPIT was the vision of Founder and Executive Director Hilary Binda, PhD. TUPIT provides opportunities for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people with access to higher education, technology upskilling, and financial education. It was an honor to work with Hilary and Quinn Williamson, the Academic Director & Program Administrator, to bring financial education to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people. And a special thanks to Amy Millay, PhD for making the introduction to the TUPIT program! We are excited to continue our partnership in the future! #kindros #financialwellness *Davis, Lois M., Robert Bozick, Jennifer L. Steele, Jessica Saunders, and Jeremy N. V. Important new brief: CCE calls on DC Department of Corrections for greater transparency on solitary confinement practices Over the last several years, we’ve worked alongside city leadership and community members to support the planning of a more humane and resident-centric correctional annex for the District. To determine whether the new facility should include units for solitary confinement and to support public consideration of proposed legislation, we sought data from DOC under DC’s Freedom of Information Act on its restrictive housing practices at the DC Jail. After more than two years of negotiation, DOC ultimately provided very limited and incomplete information - and the data that was provided raised a number of concerns. Our new brief, “More Data is Needed on the Use of Solitary Confinement in D.C.,” reviews the DOC’s solitary confinement data and argues that, without more data shared publicly, it is impossible for District-elected officials and leaders, advocates, and other stakeholders to develop and support policies around this issue of critical importance to both the protection of human rights and the promotion of a safer and healthier DC. Last month, WGU Labs attended the 13th National Alliance for Higher Education in Prison Conference to learn how active practitioners, currently and formerly incarcerated students, and support organizations are expanding and empowering learning on the inside. In our latest blog, Accelerator consultant Ramah Jihan Malebranche shares 4 takeaways from the conference. “While it's clear more work needs to be done to understand how the state of being incarcerated might affect the student experience, the conference highlighted the promise of not only advancing higher education in prisons but also inviting currently and formerly incarcerated scholars and experts to the table to provide guidance and wisdom to ensure program success.” https://lnkd.in/gQH6YVZs

CFO at Orijin, a venture-backed, education technology company (certified B-Corp) | Founding Advisor, The Promise Venture
The impact of education in correctional facilities cannot be overstated. Did you know that for each dollar spent on incarcerated learners, society sees an average return of $20? Investing in education not only reduces recidivism rates but also lowers the tax burden. Let's remove the impediments that discourage education and consider more investment in education within our correctional facilities. #Orijinedtech Check out this article to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gD3JWXWT
