🤯 What can happen when privacy expires? Take valuable notes for your next IT-meeting on renewing domain names. As part of a large-scale privacy investigation, Inti had bought more than 100 domain names previously belonging to social welfare and justice institutions in Belgium. What he observed was unsettling... see link below 👇 #hackwithintigriti
NEWS: How I was able to hack the Belgian social welfare and justice system by buying cheap domains 👇: I bought 107 expired domains in total, 32 previously belonging to police zones, 44 belonging to OCMW zones (Public Centre for Social Welfare), 12 belonging to CAW's (General Social Welfare), 12 belonging to CLB (Student Guidance Center) and some others belonging to justice- and health institutions. Immediately, I started receiving confidential e-mails: 📨 Related to the release of detainees, addressed to the police 📨 Cases for public defenders 📨 Insurance claims after accidents as a copy for the police 📨 Payment reminders for people in debt 📨 E-mails related to vulnerable people’s health or social situation 📨 Smartschool updates for the eyes of school workers only I received hundreds of confidential e-mails in merely one week of running this experiment, but also found that these accounts were still linked to at least: 📦 80 professional Dropbox accounts 📦 142 professional Google Drive accounts 📦 57 professional Microsoft/OneDrive accounts accounts Belonging to social welfare and justice workers, some of them full of information (I didn't have to login in order to see this - see blogpost). I hope this can serve as a wake-up call and encourage everyone to 👉 Install 2FA or multifactor authentication on their cloud accounts 👉 Not to upload any sensitive data to cloud storage providers without permission or guidelines of their employer 👉 Better manage expired domain names 👉 Ensure that their address book is up to date Full blogpost: https://lnkd.in/e2yhNVP7

💥 This sure is a wake-up call for everyone who owns a domain name. It’s only a small effort to renew a domain name you no longer use, compared to the potential damage you risk by letting it expire. Here’s our advice about what you can do with your website and email addresses when you stop using a domain name: https://lnkd.in/e-XHENTF

DMARC Wizard | Open security protocols are the foundation of a safe house ! ✉ lars@dmarcadvisor.com | ✆+31652690342
Your domain names are your most important (online) business assets. They are your name online, your access to the online world. Everyone recognizes your company because of your name and, thus, your domain name (it creates trust). Your website and email are attached to them. Today, communication is mainly done online. Yet, I notice daily that companies do not know exactly which domain names they have registered, let alone which may have expired. This is because the information is often not centrally documented. If you asked for a list of employees, they could find it somewhere immediately because it is centrally documented. The same even applies to the vehicles in the fleet. This example again shows how vital domain management is. Thanks Inti De Ceukelaire for sharing! #DMARC #SPF #DKIM #domains #email #domainmanagement

Ensuring Data Protection for Minors: Striking a Equilibrium Between Legal Entitlements and Obligations In an era dominated by digital landscapes and data-driven decisions, safeguarding the privacy of the most vulnerable among us, our children, has become an imperative. Kenya's Data Protection Act of 2019 recognizes the critical importance of this task in Section 33, which addresses the processing of personal data relating to a child. This provision, while ensuring that parents or guardians provide consent, places paramount importance on protecting and advancing the rights and best interests of the child. At its core, Section 33 embodies the delicate balance that modern data protection laws must strike. On one hand, it acknowledges the necessity of parental consent as a protective measure. Parents and guardians play a pivotal role in ensuring that their child's personal data is used responsibly and ethically. On the other hand, it recognizes that children, as individuals with their rights, deserve special consideration. One of the key elements of this section is the requirement for data controllers and processors to incorporate appropriate mechanisms for age verification and consent. This signifies a proactive approach to ensure that the processing of personal data pertaining to children is carried out with the highest standards of responsibility. These mechanisms must be tailored to various factors, such as available technology, the volume of data involved, and the potential for harm to the child. In essence, they acknowledge that the risks and requirements associated with children's data may differ significantly from those of adults. Additionally, the provision offers a pragmatic perspective. It recognizes that there may be instances, such as when an entity exclusively provides counseling or child protection services, where seeking parental consent might not be practical or necessary. This nuanced approach ensures that organizations dedicated to the welfare of children can function effectively while still adhering to the core principles of data protection. The underlying message of Section 33 is clear: protecting children's privacy is not merely a legal obligation but a moral imperative. It underscores the need to approach data processing with a deep sense of responsibility and ethics, especially when it concerns the most vulnerable members of our society. As we navigate the intricate landscape of data protection, it's essential to remember that the true measure of a society's progress is how well it safeguards the rights and interests of its children. In Kenya, Section 33 stands as a testament to our commitment to achieving that goal, ensuring that the digital age we live in does not compromise the safety and privacy of the next generation. #childprotection #dataprotectionlaw #dataprotectionact #kenya

It's very likely that the vast majority of these domains continued to enjoy a good reputation in terms of web filtering and domain categorization. I can't imagine the damage that could have been done in case of bad intentions... Having an external surface attack management tool, configuring it properly and using it is essential. Given the low cost of renewing a domain, even those no longer in use should continue to be extended, unless you've really done all the necessary checks before leaving it.
