BREAKING: Renay Lynch was just exonerated in Buffalo, New York after 26 years of wrongful conviction for the 1995 murder and robbery of her landlord. Crime scene fingerprint evidence pointed to another tenant of the victim as an alternative suspect. “I have waited 26 years for this day to come,” said Renay. “That’s days without seeing my children grow up, days without holding my grandchildren, days that I will never get back. I'm grateful to finally have this weight lifted.”

"5 Misconceptions about individuals on death row" For over a decade, I have been deeply involved in death row intervention work, advocating for the rights of those who claim innocence behind bars. Through my experiences, I have encountered several misconceptions about individuals on death row that I believe are important to address. 1. Not all individuals on death row are guilty: It's a common misconception that everyone on death row is guilty of the crimes for which they were convicted. However, there have been cases of wrongful convictions and subsequent exonerations, shedding light on the fallibility of the justice system. 2. They are not all inherently violent and dangerous: Contrary to popular belief, not everyone on death row is inherently violent and dangerous. Some may have been involved in non-violent crimes or have undergone rehabilitation during their time in prison. 3. Fair trials are not guaranteed: There is a misconception that everyone on death row has received a fair trial with competent legal representation. However, numerous cases have revealed issues with legal representation and the fairness of trial processes. 4. Compassion and empathy are essential: Despite the nature of their crimes, individuals on death row deserve compassion and empathy. It's crucial to recognize their humanity and approach their situations with an open mind. 5. Past criminal records should not define them: Individuals on death row should not be judged solely based on their past criminal records. Each case is complex and warrants a deeper understanding of the circumstances. In my upcoming book, "Their Stories Behind Bars," I delve into these misconceptions and share how we have worked to facilitate the freedom of those wrongfully sentenced to death. Through our efforts, we have seen individuals acquitted and justice restored, even after failed appeals to the Supreme Court. I invite you to connect with me to discuss these important issues and share your views. Let's engage in a meaningful conversation about the complexities of the justice system and the individuals affected by it. Together, we can work towards a more just and compassionate approach to those on death row. Your thought on this? #wrongfulconviction #restorativejustice #alternativedisputeresolution #leadership #adebimpeadeloro #hopebehindbar #nancyosakolo #supremecourt #lawstudents

This week, the Tennessee General Assembly will take up more than their normal share of criminal justice bills as part of the Senate Judiciary Committee's Enhancement Calendar. This special calendar solely includes bills that create a new criminal offense or raise the classification — or penalties — of an existing offense. All legislators can propose bills that aim to address gaps in the criminal justice system or the evolving needs of their communities. But it's the members of the Judiciary Committee who must evaluate and determine if these bills can advance to the next step of the legislative process. Check out some of the bills we'll be following below ⬇️ SB 1857 – Creates a Class A misdemeanor for a parent or guardian for leaving a child in the care of a sexual offender SB 2049 – Mandates additional court costs to go to the promotion of public safety SB 2342 – Creates a criminal offense where someone threatens to commit an act of mass violence SB 2054 – Clarifies a DAG shall only prosecute cases in municipal court with sufficient prosecutorial personnel SB 1754 – Imposes stricter penalties on various charges related to fentanyl

Protecting your rights during a police investigation is essential to ensure fair treatment and uphold your constitutional rights. Assert your right to remain silent and ask if you are free to leave. Avoid volunteering any information without legal counsel present. If you are being detained or arrested, calmly inquire about the reason for your detention and ask to speak with a lawyer immediately. Avoid physical resistance, as it may lead to additional charges. Refrain from consenting to any searches unless the police have a valid warrant or there is probable cause. Document the incident, including badge numbers and officer names, if possible, to create a record of the encounter.
