Monday, February 12th marks Abraham Lincoln's 215th birthday! 🎩 He was responsible for so many great acts that sometimes overlooked is his support of improvements to the nation's transportation network. Look no further than our own I&M Canal for which we was long a supporter (and owing to his height, also a LONG supporter 😁). He voted for the construction of the canal as a state rep, advocated for federal funds for transportation improvements as a congressman and as president pushed Congress to enlarge the canal to better transport troops and ships. The last one failed but laid the groundwork for the Illinois Waterway system, which is in use today. Ultimately his efforts on behalf of the I&M Canal led to more expansion and growth in the Midwest, the explosion of Chicago into a metropolis and a boon to states throughout the Union. For instance, speaking to Congress in 1848 (the year the canal opened), he pointed out how sugar was being more cost effectively transported from Louisiana to New York because the canal now offered an all-water route from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. The savings each state enjoyed was "a benefit resulting from the canal, not to Illinois where the canal is, but to Louisiana and New York where it is not." So, keep this in mind as today's government entities consider transportation and infrastructure projects. Just remember what good ol' Abe Lincoln believed: federally funded transportation infrastructure–if executed in strategic areas–could benefit the entire nation.
