Rice University, the Association of Rice Alumni, the Rice University School of Engineering, and the Rice Engineering Alumni all share a common bond that the George R. Brown School of Engineering refers to as "Solving for Greater Good". Rice is a small school, but it has deeply talent researchers, students, and alumni across many fields and they understand that the way to have an out-sized impact (versus their actual size) is in recognizing the need to work together to address local and global challenges, and that, often, solutions to previously unsolvable problems lay at the intersections of disciplines. As a result, the nine engineering departments collectively operate more than twenty centers and institutes which bring diverse backgrounds together to address intersectional problems. A few of my favorites include NEWT Engineering Research Center (NEWT = Nanotechnology-Enabled Water Treatment), the Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies, and the newest, the Rice WaTER Institute (WaTER = Water Technologies Entrepreneurship and Research). Each year the Rice Engineering Alumni board draws upon volunteers to enable its mission to support, honor and connect Rice engineers both before and after graduation. I'm looking forward to seeing the directions in which our new board members' collective expertise, passion, and resources will help grow REA! And further ensure that Rice continues to foster collaboration and innovation both inside and outside the Rice hedges. So we can continue "Solving for Greater Good"…

Black History Month Day 10... Granville Tailer Woods (April 23, 1856 – January 30, 1910) was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War. Known as "Black Edison," he registered patents, including a telephone transmitter, a trolley wheel and the multiplex telegraph (over which he defeated a lawsuit by Thomas Edison). Woods's most important invention was the multiplex telegraph, also known as the "induction telegraph," or block system, in 1887. The device allowed people to communicate by voice over telegraph wires, ultimately helping to speed up important communications and, subsequently, preventing crucial errors such as train accidents. Woods defeated Edison's lawsuit that challenged his patent, and turned down Edison's offer to make him a partner. Thereafter, Woods was often known as "Black Edison." After receiving the patent for the multiplex telegraph, Woods reorganized his Cincinnati company as the Woods Electric Co. In 1890, he moved his own research operations to New York City, where he was joined by a brother, Lyates Woods, who also had several inventions of his own. Woods's next most important invention was the power pick-up device in 1901, which is the basis of the so-called "third rail" currently used by electric-powered transit systems. From 1902 to 1905, he received patents for an improved air-brake system. By the time of his death Wood held nearly 60 patents and is still considered to be one of the most prolific inventors in American History. The event brought together students, industry experts, and innovators in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering. We hosted insightful technical sessions, competitive events, and hands-on workshops, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among participants. The symposium was a platform for young engineers to showcase their talents and learn from some of the brightest minds in the industry, driving both personal and professional growth."
