Afro-Latina 2x Personal Development Author 📚 | Inspiring people to live on purpose and in their purpose 🧠
Every college and university that does not have Reroute: Post Grad Guide To Success- Physically, Mentally, and Financially in their schools for their students is doing a disservice to their student population, specifically first-generation students. There are not enough counselors to support student needs. Most students don’t know what to do after college or how to navigate that part of their lives. I was talking to a friend a few weeks back, and we discussed how students are in class falling asleep because they have jobs they have to work to put them through school. Higher education institutions are not set up for the success of students of color/first-generation students; they are expensive, and most students have to pick up jobs to put themselves through school (I was one of them). In addition, with COVID, these students were set back years and are playing catch up and not given the resources to succeed. This is why my book is revolutionary and needed on every college campus in America to give them a resource to succeed beyond school, beyond passing classes, but in the real world.

With reference to my post yesterday, I would like to talk about Sp-Ed. Special Education - I would like to ask the question why did the need for the concept of "special education" arise? The answer is simple yet clear. Because education was inaccessible to those of us with divergent brains. Sp-Ed is not "special" or something that has to be provided as a favor, it's simply making education accessible. People who aren't labelled as 'special needs' already have accessible education i.e. education system has been designed to be accessible for their brains. My two cents here? It is not Special Education; it is Accessible Education. Education should be accessible to EVERYONE. Doing so should not be a 'special' initiative, it should be a basic human right.

I am retiring from education. It’s been an amazing journey, but it’s time for me to go. I have had ONE good year out of the last 5. My last two years have been so plagued by behavior issues, disrespect, and even mental and emotional abuse from the children I’m supposed to be teaching. The American education system is in shambles. But I don’t blame the children. I blame the parents. The unrestricted access these students have to smart phones has absolutely destroyed their ability to consume content that isn’t spoon fed to them through a screen. Challenging ideas and projects are met with blank stares. Screens come out, and all learning stops. Students are told again and again to put their phones away, but there are no teeth to the expectations. They have poor guidance regarding the simplest social behaviors because they are left to learn from social media. They understand nothing of conflict resolution, empathy, or expectations of the social contract. You want to talk about the decline of America? It has already started with the falling and failing standards of a system structured on CENTURY OLD societal and cultural needs. Institutions that fail to change will quickly become irrelevant. Our current way of doing education passed that point almost 2 decades ago.
