⭐ Don't forget to celebrate progress, BIG or small ⭐ In academia, we often wait for big wins, such as publishing a paper, securing a grant, or completing a project, to celebrate our achievements. But every step we take matters, and those small milestones deserve recognition, too. Whether it's submitting a manuscript, supervising a student, or simply starting/progressing on a difficult task: take time to reflect & celebrate these moments! It can help keep us motivated and remind us of the process that shapes us as scientists. So, don't only focus on reaching the goal (and then setting another one directly after), but also acknowledge the journey! I'll do one today: I just submitted a COST Action proposal with >30 proposers from 20 countries. While the outcome has to wait for another 6 months, this moment feels like a victory in itself. Will celebrate the teamwork and dedication tonight with going out for dinner! 👉 TLDR: take a moment to celebrate the small wins in your (academic journey), as they are building blocks of the bigger success!

Just left a That's Me! Project Committee meeting, and feeling inspired by the progress being made. There are a wide range of talented colleagues leading the work, supported by passionate and committed staff from across the university. ‘That’s Me’ is a £1 million OfS-funded initiative aimed at breaking down barriers for postgraduate researchers from global majority backgrounds in the West Midlands. As someone from the community who ventured into higher education, I quickly noticed the scarcity of role models in the sector. The underrepresentation of Black professors for example was well-documented. However, progress is being made in this space across the sector, but particularly here at the University of Wolverhampton. Therefore, I’m thrilled to be part of initiatives like ‘That’s Me!’ which address this gap and much, much more, by tackling the leaky pipeline that affects the wider global majority group. The project’s workstreams are now making a tangible impact. What’s particularly impressive is that the benefits are extending beyond our PGR community to the entire university. For instance, our Reverse Mentoring programme is making waves. As a mentee myself, I’ve experienced its profound impact. The key lies in how we apply what we’ve learned, and ‘That’s Me!’ along with the new University Strategy 2035, are ideal platforms to drive the changes our student body and wider communities demand. We acknowledge there’s still a long journey ahead, but projects like ‘That’s Me!’ are crucial in guiding and facilitating our progress. Always give it a try! You never know if you will win. November 2023, I got a call from my debating society. "Hello Naimot, we have an InterFaculty debate competition coming up, we need two representatives to represent our faculty and go against 11 Faculties on OAU Campus. Immediately, I said I was not interested. I was afraid of failing, I didn't have enough courage to go against strong faculties. But a friend called me behind and asked me to go for it. I was skeptical at first but I later made up my mind to represent my Faculty with my other debater. We started training day and night, rehearsing and practicing was really stressful and rigorous. It got to a point I wanted to stop, what if we did not win after this training? I know I will be heartbroken. 💔 Guess who emerged in Third Position after three rounds of competitions with other Faculty? My Faculty did! I was not only happy because I won, I was happy because I gave it a try. The experience I gained from the competition can not be compared. I'm now fond of my skills, and I know I can do anything I want to achieve. ✨ This is just to tell you that you can do it only if you give it a try. You never know what will happen if never try it out. How do you give it a try? 💡 Have Confidence in yourself and be sure of the skill you have. 💡 Practice and prepare: I don't think we can achieve anything if we do not prepare or practice towards archiving it. 💡 Be ready to face challenges but never allow them to stop you. 💡 Always give it a try. It's Day 7 of the Consistency Challenge with Our Coach Queensley Ojo. Here is an experience that impacts a big change in my life and Career. P.S: Have you ever stopped doing something because you think you will fail? P S: Tell me an experience that impacts a big change in you. #MotivationalTalks #Goforit #Experiencematters #Debating #PublicSpeaking #PersonalBrandingmasterywithQueensley
