I had an opportunity to share my experience on Blended with Sarah Barnes-Humphrey and some wonderful ladies about the complexities of networking. Where do you like to network or build relationships? 🏌🏼♀️ Golf course 💼 Industry event 🍸 Bar 💻 Online Success (in any industry) is often tied to our ability to network and build relationships. And I'm sure we've all heard about a business deal made while golfing or over a late-night beer. But what we don't talk about enough is how this "way of doing business" can exclude women ... Female professionals who lack golf skills or who don't feel comfortable staying out alone till 2 a.m. often miss out on these valuable networking or business opportunities. And these are factors we **all** need to consider. Our most recent guests, Lynn Wong, NBC-HWC, Kristy Knichel, and Benita Lee, B.Mgt., CCS, shared the do's and don'ts of networking. From drinking to shaking hands and the differences between on and offline networking, they graciously shared their own experiences for us to learn from. Tune in to hear honest and authentic conversations, including: → Why we need to normalize asking for consent and setting boundaries (Are you a hugger or a hand-shaker?) → How to navigate difficult conversations through shifting perspectives, NOT disagreeing → Why who pays the bill changes the dynamic, and how to manage assumptions at group dinners Full ep is available here: https://hubs.la/Q02xMq1B0 Let me know what you think!

Swoogo hosted a networking dinner on Wednesday night. "I never come to these," a guest confided. "I'm in events. I know what happens next." "So what made you come to ours?" 𝟏. 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 "The person from your sales team who invited me was really communicative and made sure I had everything I needed to say yes. I could tell it wouldn't be cheesy just from her emails, she really seemed to care." 𝟐. 𝐀 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐢𝐧-𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 "I looked up the menu in advance and was excited to try the food. You get kind of tired of steak and salmon after awhile." (Shout out to our friends at Budonoki in LA) 𝟑. 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 "The complimentary valet really sealed the deal. If I'm going to brave traffic, knowing I won't have to also fight for parking is a breath of fresh air." With so much panic going around about low accept rates, differentiation, and making your event stand out— imagine my relief when I realized how easy these variables are to control, and would be to repeat. As organizers, it's easy to get caught up in "attendee experience." But is it possible that approaching our guests as attendees and not just ✨ people ✨ has us overthinking the whole thing? Basic human treatment. Basic human interests met. And just like that, we had an incredible night 🎇

Host and Director Brand & Communications of DMEXCO | I want to make the opportunities of digital marketing even more tangible and at the same time promote a responsible approach to it.
#DMEXCO24 is almost there. So it's high time to think about 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝: From many years of networking, event and trade fair experience, here are my 9 tips for your perfect personal appearance at #DMEXCO: 🤝 Prepare well. You don't meet the most exciting people by chance. Ask those you really want to meet for appointments. Pro tip: You can see who will be there in the DMEXCO app. 🤝 Post on Linkedin that you will be there. This will attract the attention of people who want to meet you. You can even conduct a survey among your followers to see who is going to DMEXCO. Pro tip: Use the DMEXCO #PictureGenerator. 🤝 Save your Linkedin profile QR code as your wallpaper. This way you can quickly connect with anyone on the platform. 🤝 Be open and speak to others. In front of the mirrors in the bathroom, in the coffee queue or the rows of chairs in the conference are perfect contact points for meeting people by chance. 🤝 Be travelling alone. If you don't have a companion, it's easier to strike up a conversation with others. Be brave and go to a stand party or dinner on your own. Simply stand or sit with others and don't forget - most people are there to network. 🤝 Be yourself, be open, approachable and personal. Don't pretend, don't make a sales pitch. It's a people business. Likeability counts more than the perfect pitch. Studies show that people who like each other work together more successfully. 🤝 Be inclusive and introduce others. You will be remembered as a good networker. People will like to have you around because you help others. 🤝 Ask people you like or find interesting for a selfie. You can post this on Linkedin afterwards and link the person. 🤝 Don't forget your after-DMEXCO posting. You can publish pictures from the event or with interesting people there. You can link people. You can summarise your learnings. Or you can simply describe your experiences and best moments. Pro tip: The more personal the better. With these 9 tips, you are now well prepared for DMEXCO on 18 and 19 September, but of course also for all other events. I hope to see you there and take a souvenir selfie! 🤖PS: Sign up for my newsletter #DMEXCO #DigitalDigest to receive articles like that directly in your inbox. Equipping leaders and Subject-Matter Experts to make a greater impact. | Training and Consulting | Author | Coach
THE POWER OF FOLLOWING UP Last month, I spoke at a professional development summit hosted by the Black Employee Resource Groups at W.K. Kellogg and Kellanova. I always offer myself as a resource for my audiences and invite them to stay in touch. After the event, I met Mari. The event was hosted in the Chicagoland area, but we discovered that we lived 15 minutes from each other. We talked about meeting for lunch or coffee, and last week, she followed up to set a date. She shared that in the past, she might have been hesistant to follow up because she didn’t like to feel like she was bothering people. I’ll admit, I don’t always have the time to connect so quickly, but spending time with her was a highlight of my week and I now feel personally invested in her future success. Two things: 1. Stop saying, “We should get together.” Pull out your calendar and get a date on the books. 2. Don’t assume you’re bothering someone by reaching out. If it’s a busy season for them and they can’t connect immediately, add a reminder to your calendar to follow up in a couple months. Relationships can take you further than 12 certifications or hundreds of hours on social media. Invest accordingly.
Happy Friday Jr! Sharing this as a reminder for you to lean in and nurture your relationships. We hear all the time that there is power in networking and there absolutely is! Another benefit from the KAARG Power Up Summit was the amazing speakers and the opportunities to network. I so deeply appreciated and resonated with Isha Cogborn’s content and presentation style. I immediately connected with her after her keynote at the Summit and then connected with her on LI. My intentionality to build my network led us to connecting over lunch this week. I encourage you to follow up, keep in touch, schedule time, and be authentic with your contacts after networking events. Don’t be afraid that you’re a “bother” - I’ve learned that there is value on both sides. Isha Cogborn - thank you again for your time, it was great getting to know you and we have so much in common. 😃 Looking forward to many more connects! ❤️

You're greeted by ambassadors - so you'll never feel alone. We're super inclusive. - so you don't need to worry. You're provided with drinks and food throughout the night (alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks are served). - so you'll go home fed and watered. You'll meet at least 8 new people in our structured networking sessions. - so you get to build your network (and your friendship group). You'll participate in educational presentations. - so you'll expand your FM knowledge. You'll go away feeling that you got something out of it. - so that time you committed to attending is well worth it. You'll discoverer new opportunities in a non-pressurised environment. - so all you need to do it turn up and enjoy. If you've been to one of our events, how would you answer the question... Do you feel comfortable introducing yourself to a group of people at a networking event? It's a bit awkward isn't it? I've always found these situations difficult to manoeuvre, so I decided to push through the discomfort and see what happens. Well, I'm still here, I didn't get swallowed by a hole in the ground. To be honest, it didn't feel that bad at all. Here's what I did at local networking events: I picked a small group of 3-4 people I hadn't met before, wandered over with a disarming smile and said "Do you mind if I join your conversation?" Nothing more clever than that, and it worked every time. People made space and we did short introductions before resuming the conversation. It does get easier with time. I'd love to try some different opening lines, so tell me: what's your favourite thing to say when joining a group of strangers? How do you 'break into it'?
