Where do the REE in carbonatites come from? Probably not subducted REE-rich marine sediments. In a new paper we show that: 1. High REE in the subducting sediment correlate with a strongly negative cerium anomales. 2. Carbonatites have no negative cerium anomalies. Trust us, we checked it very carefully with lots of fancy math. 1+2. Wherever the REE-rich subducted sediments ended up in, it wasn't the mantle source of carbonatites.
