Levelling up: Rethinking regional development in the United Kingdom How do we create economic growth that reaches everyone, everywhere? A new study by Rob Huggins, Piers Thompson, Malcolm Beynon, David Pickernell, and Paul Jones in the Annals of Regional Science tackles this question, using a sophisticated analytical approach to unravel why some #regions thrive while others struggle. The findings go against the simplicity of "one-size-fits-all" policies and advocate for more nuanced, region-specific strategies. The study underlines that economic #development hinges on the interaction of factors such as #innovation, #entrepreneurship, human capital, and local activity levels. It reveals that regions often follow entrenched pathways shaped by historical advantages (or disadvantages). For example, areas with longstanding industrial legacies or remote coastal locations face structural challenges that require unconventional and deeply targeted interventions. Meanwhile, regions like Leeds and South Gloucestershire show how investing in entrepreneurial ecosystems and innovation clusters can yield transformative growth. The authors argue that achieving #Britain’s levelling-up ambitions demands recognising the profound diversity of regional conditions and avoiding homogenised policy solutions. Instead, policymakers must collaborate with businesses and communities to foster tailored strategies that account for local strengths and challenges. To truly address regional #inequality, we need to move beyond the traditional efficiency vs. equity debate. The future of territorial #development lies in place-sensitive strategies, that is approaches that balance local strengths with broader systemic challenges. By recognising the unique potential of each region and tailoring policies accordingly, we can unlock economic opportunities for both dynamic and left-behind areas. This shift requires addressing key barriers such as weak institutions, limited innovation, and social discontent as a way to foster a more inclusive, resilient form of #growth. My new research with Federico Bartalucci, Nancy Lozano & María Eugenia Dávalos posits that it is time for a development model that goes beyond one-size-fits-all, helping all regions thrive by playing to their strengths and tackling their challenges head-on. https://lnkd.in/du-YABah

Stories of resilience, transformation, and innovation highlight the diverse strategies rural communities are using to revitalize local economies, honour cultural heritage, and advance sustainability. The British Columbia chapter—Risks and Transition Towards Resilient Economic Pathways—explores how the province is integrating reconciliation into rural development strategies, addressing climate change through innovative adaptation and mitigation, and expanding opportunities for remote work and entrepreneurship through digitalization. Dr. Sarah-Patricia Breen, BC Regional Innovation Chair in Rural Economic Development at Selkirk College, co-authored this chapter. I am delighted to share that our paper, titled " Examining the connection between resourcefulness and resilience: analysis of UK rural SME firm-level enterprise characteristics" (co-authored by Nenia (Evgenia) Micha and Damian Maye), has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Rural Studies. Countryside and Community Research Institute, University of Gloucestershire. This is part of the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE) research project and it explored the relationship between #resourcefulness and #resilience in #rural UK small and medium-sized enterprises (#SMEs), highlighting how these firms have adapted and thrived during the #Covid pandemic. By clustering firms based on key enterprise characteristics, our study aimed to contribute valuable insights to the ongoing discussions about #rural_development, #resourcefulness and #business_resilience. https://lnkd.in/edN5H3-A
