Bridge Builder | Listener | Dialogue Designer and Facilitator | Highly Evaluated Educator | Policy Developer and Advocate | Team Leader | Environmental, Peace, Democracy Expert | Experienced Researcher | Editor
📣 Honored to announce that I’ll be presenting alongside Brian N. Williams at #PeaceCon2024, organized by the Alliance for Peacebuilding! 🕊 https://lnkd.in/eDrsPYCT Our presentation, entitled "Cultivating Belonging and Restoring Dignity Through Building Trust in U.S. Universities During the Protests of 2023-2024," will focus on a crucial issue: bringing humanity back into our political discussions. In a time of heightened polarization, it's more important than ever to engage in constructive disagreement. We all have a role in supporting peace and democracy, and a great starting place is the courage to listen across difference. This panel at PeaceCon is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the broader societal tensions reflected in these protests, with an eye toward the implications for the upcoming academic year alongside practical approaches to unify and support. Our presentation connects directly to our project this year at UVa - Reimagining Protest and Policing in the Public Square: Centering Humanity in the Design and Delivery of Solutions. Through gatherings, workshops and sustained dialogue, our project provides another opportunity for our community to learn from one another across viewpoints, and to learn from the past as a means to come together at this present moment and to join in actions that support a thriving community. Our goals? 🔅 Facilitating a process that actualizes an enhanced sense of “we” by taking a Human-Centered Design approach to co-create and co-design implementable policies and practices ❤️ Be active in listening to and supporting our local community through a time of tension and apprehension 💫 Boost civic and political engagement 🌳 Enhancing wellness, wellbeing, and relational policing Increases understanding, trust and confidence in democratic institutions If you can, come and share conversation with us and with peace practitioners from all over the world. #deeplistening #abraverway #depolarize #dialogue #protest #university #freespeech #communitypolicerelations #relationalpolicing #dignity #peacebuilding

Over the past four years of IPSS events, it has been a tradition to have an artist from Drawing Change visually represent key takeaways from the panels at our conferences. This particular graphic highlights the key takeaways from the panel Redefining Collaborative Development in Treaty 8 Territory, sponsored by Ovintiv. Here’s what we took away from the discussion: 1️⃣ The health of the land is intricately linked to the health of the people of the land. 2️⃣ There is great value in creating opportunities in local communities. 3️⃣ Indigenous people are proud of their land and want to be involved in everything that affects it. 4️⃣ Reinforcing the importance of open communication, it’s clear that transparency, trust, and honesty are foundational in building long-term relationships. 5️⃣ And, remember, as a friendly piece of advice - never show up without lunch! #economicreconciliation #undrip #IndigenousCanada

Need for Independent Organizations- Independent organizations without vested interests are essential to support community stewards working across the country. Government's Limited Capacity- Government agencies have limited capacity to facilitate and amplify the positive impact created by community stewards. Role of Local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)- Local CSOs are a viable option to promote and support these community stewards over the long term. CSOs Require Facilitation- Local CSOs also need facilitation and capacity-building support to effectively promote and support community stewards. Involvement of Leading Livelihood Promoting Organizations- Leading organizations specializing in livelihood promotion are best suited to provide the required facilitation support to local CSOs. Need for Financial Support- Government bodies, bilateral/multilateral agencies, and international NGOs should provide financial backing for such initiatives. Promotion of a Community Stewards Network- A nationwide network of community stewards, supported by alliances with CSOs, is crucial for sustaining efforts to manage and preserve community commons. Overcoming Language Barriers- While language may pose a challenge, building this network is still feasible and necessary for the long-term sustainability of community commons. https://lnkd.in/dk7i9EtU

A Rotary Community Corps (RCC) is a group of non-Rotarians who share our commitment to changing the world through service projects. Check out video below... RCC members plan and carry out projects in their communities in collaboration with local Rotary clubs. Sponsored by a Rotary club, an RCC leverages Rotary’s network, brand, and mentorship by partnering with clubs to plan and implement service projects. RCCs increase Rotary’s impact and expand its reach by bringing the knowledge and talents of local people to strengthen their community through sustainable projects. There are more than 12,000 corps in 105 countries and 257 Rotary districts. RCCs are active everywhere Rotary is present: in urban and rural areas, and in both developed and developing countries. Program Goals: Promote sustainable solutions to community needs Support community members in addressing community needs while recognizing their unique ability to identify pressing concerns and appropriate solutions Develop partnerships between Rotarians and non-Rotarians in a joint effort to strengthen the community How do I form an RCC as a community volunteer? You can form an RCC anywhere community members are interested in working with Rotary. Here are some guidelines: -Work with other local residents to identify the community’s greatest needs using this assessment form. -Work with a local Rotary club to outline how you will work together. -Recruit RCC members. Start with a core group of members. Community organizations and nongovernmental agencies are good places to recruit. Questions or need support? Light Up Your Street! As citizens of our towns and cities, we rely on municipal services to provide us with basic necessities such as clean water, functioning street lights and properly maintained roads. Unfortunately, some municipalities fall short in their duties, leaving their residents to suffer the consequences. This is where AfriForum's branches come in. AfriForum is a civil rights organization that aims to protect the rights of minorities in South Africa. One of their initiatives is to assist in improving municipal services in towns and cities. They do this by undertaking projects to fix street light decay and keep records to ensure success. Streetlights are an essential part of any community, providing lighting for safe travel at night and deterring crime. However, over time, street lights can deteriorate, leading to a lack of lighting and a potential increase in crime. This is where AfriForum's branches step in. They identify areas where street light decay is prevalent and undertake projects to fix the issue. AfriForum's branches keep records to ensure the success of their projects. They document the extent of the decay before the project begins and record the progress made during the project. Once the project is complete, they document the improvements made and report back to the municipality to ensure that the issue is resolved. By undertaking these projects, AfriForum's branches are making a significant impact in their communities. Not only are they improving the safety of their neighbourhoods, but they are also creating a sense of community involvement and empowerment. Through their efforts, they are showing that change can be made when citizens come together to tackle issues affecting their communities. It is important to note that while AfriForum's branches are making a significant impact, they cannot do it alone. They require the support of their communities to identify areas where municipal services are lacking and to assist with projects to fix these issues. By working together, citizens can create safer and more liveable communities for all. https://lnkd.in/gPrb9Sxh
