The way we allocate and spend the council’s budget is guided by our residents and businesses. These priorities were shaped in the borough’s 20-year vision and strategic plan. We face significant cost and demand pressures with needs for our services at an all time high, but we continue to ‘Target Support to Make Things Fairer’ subsidising where we can to support or residents and parts of the borough that need it the most. Last night’s Budget did not acknowledge the real role that local government plays in Australian communities. There was no change to the funding system that underpins our councils. Increased untied federal funding to local government would help many people to access services at low or no fee. These are the libraries, the parks, the festivals, the outreach services and so much more that make a community vibrant and connected. It would help local governments to unlock the housing potential. On the ground implementation for this national priority requires local knowledge for success. Untied funding empowers local government to meet local community need and this opportunity was overlooked. I’d encourage all local governments to make a submission to the local government sustainability inquiry, as this Budget demonstrates the need for change to the funding system. ALGA will certainly be providing one.
❄ Australia’s 537 councils have been left out in the cold on the #Budget2024 tonight.❄ The Albanese Government has broken its pre-election promise to provide “fair increases” to Financial Assistance Grants. President Councillor Linda Scott (GAICD) said these untied federal grants are vital to enabling local government to deliver more affordable #housing, and cost-of-living relief through access to free and low-cost services. Cr Scott also welcomed the intent of new #housing and active #transport programs but highlighted that #councils should be able to apply directly for this funding. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/dgz4G_aK

"With the sector broadly in favour of the government’s call to ‘Get Britain building again,’ many housing providers have welcomed the Autumn budget for providing a much-needed shot in the arm to kickstart growth and promote improvement. For some, it didn’t go far enough to address the systemic issues associated with social housing, leaving it to housing providers to balance urgent repairs programmes alongside bigger picture schemes to improve outcomes for residents in the long-term." 💷 'The Autumn Budget - Taking Stock' is now live and available to read on our website, offering insight into the implications of the Autumn Budget across the sector, as well as on the homeowners and communities we serve. 👀 To read the full piece, visit: https://lnkd.in/eUak6BUG #DWG #autumnbudget #skills #puttingresidentsfirst

Autumn Budget: what does it mean for the voluntary sector? 💷 Yesterday's Budget brings a lot of changes for local infrastructure organisations, the voluntary sector, and the communities we work with. We welcome announcements that will continue the core work of voluntary sector organisations in communities, supported and enabled by local infrastructure organisations (LIOs), including: - £1 billion for the Household Support Fund (HSF) and Discretionary Housing Payments in 2025-26 - The UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UK SPF) will continue for a further year, at a reduced rate of £900 million - £240 million for pathfinder projects for employment support programmes, as part of plans in the Get Britain Working White Paper - An additional £1.3 billion for local government, including £600 million for social care and £230 million for homelessness and rough sleeping. We will continue to engage with Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Department of Health and Social Care, Department for Culture, Media and Sport and other relevant government departments to push the case for local infrastructure within the spending review. What do you think are the most important Budget announcements for the voluntary sector or for local infrastructure organisations? Let us know in the comments 💬

A little councillor update from me... January is quiet in some respects as there are no council meetings BUT as part of the group that leads the council, we are preparing the budget for the new year. Unsurprisingly there are lots of crossovers of considerations with what I know from my corporate life BUT a key difference is that councils have a responsibility to spend the funds collected from local businesses, local people and central government wisely to provide great services; running at a "profit" in the same way as in a corporate sense is not ideal. Maintaining cashflow and having a sensible level of reserves is absolutely a good idea, but the overall approach should be to spend to give the local area great value for money. As always, please shout with any questions and if I can help I will, and if I can't I'll direct you to my more learned colleagues #boroughcouncillor #localpolitics #reserves #publicsector

2moIf you are looking to balance the councils budget how about you get rid of the new £124,000 post that has been recently created and also reduce the salary for the Councils Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive, there are also a number of management staff that do not provide value for money in many depts such as Transport and Cleansing, Highways just to think of a couple who’s salaries could be reduced, that would save a few bob
