11- days with a non-stop constant flow of concrete. That’s what was needed for the slip form construction of the 227-foot main shaft headframe – a structure needed initially to sink the main shaft and gain access to the zinc orebody for underground exploration and initial development. Once the orebody access is established and underground exploration is completed, the shafts set up our underground operational plans that will result in a surface footprint 95% smaller than other comparable mines. Completed safely ahead of schedule, the main shaft headframe marks yet another infrastructure milestone on the path to operations at Hermosa and ensures we’re one step closer to producing two of the critical minerals the nation needs to guarantee an energy-secure future.

An impressive development for this fast tracked impressive long life polymetallic critical minerals project. I watch with interest as this high-tech automated operation is developed as all efforts are made to reduce the CO2 and particulate emissions. With a massive ore body that extends to 1.2km depth it is no wonder that ore hoisting has been chosen. It is a pity that the development of battery electric mine vehicles/truck is lagging which will frustrate the transitioning away from diesel truck haulage and constrain the maximum production rate in the decline. It is good to see the winder in the background and it will be nice to know the comparison of cost per tonne of ore delivered to surface by hoisting vs. decline truck haulage from 800m depth to justify the eye watering main shaft development cost. I am sure we are still to hear about many more interesting designs, clean energy solutions and technologies that will emerge from this project.
