Maritime traffic around South Africa rises dramatically Seaborne traffic across all shipping segments sailing around South Africa has risen by a remarkable 53% in the past three months as the world witnesses a sea change to the global liner trade map. In stark contrast to this increase, there has been a significant drop in maritime traffic between the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Aden. Some of the largest players in the industry has confirmed this changing pattern in sea trade, including Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line). All three have suspended navigation through the Red Sea. Not using the Suez Canal means a vessel from the UK’s Port of Felixstowe, heading towards Mumbai in India, has to complete a journey of 19 800 kilometres compared to 11 600km via the Mediterranean-Suez-Arabian Sea route. Red Sea disruptions boost Colombo’s transshipment volumes The Port of Colombo is experiencing a surge in transshipment volumes, up 30% year-to-date, attributed to heightened cargo flows to and from the Middle East, which were traditionally serviced by Asia-Europe lines via the Suez Canal before the Red Sea crisis. Transshipment volumes at the port reached 528,348 TEUs in February, continuing a streak of double-digit growth observed since December last year. 🇹🇭The land bridge project is designed to provide a new trade route between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It will include two deep sea ports on Thailand’s eastern and western coasts as well as a rail and road system linking them together. The eastern port will be located in Chumphon province on the Gulf of Thailand and the other in Ranong province on the Andaman Sea. The first phase of the land bridge project is expected to finish in 2030, with the final completion targeted in 2039. Deep sea ports would be built at either end of the “bridge”, where containers would be unloaded, transported across the peninsula, and continue on another ship. MOZ PORTS 2023 RESULTS: "Mozambique’s state-owned rail and port company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique EP (CFM) last year handled a total of 26.6 million tonnes of cargo. In announcing this, chairman of the CFM Board of Directors, Agostinho Langa Jnr, said the figure achieved represented a growth of around 8 per cent when compared with 2022. The figure covers the ports and railways operated under the control and jurisdiction of CFM, but will exclude cargo volumes achieved at concessioned ports and terminals such as Maputo and Matola and Nacala-a-Velha. He said that CFM had successfully completed various infrastructure projects that had been budgeted, such as the rehabilitation and expansion of the Port of Nacala and the Machipanda line between Beira and the Zimbabwe border, as well as the doubling of the Ressano Garcia line between Maputo and the South African Lebombo border at Komatipoort. Other capital projects saw the upgrading of Maputo Central Station and the acquisition of locomotives and wagons for use in the port area. It had also been possible to conclude, during the same period, the expansion of the Beira Port Oil Terminal and the acquisition of tugboats and speedboats for the northern Port of Nacala."
