In a world preoccupied with the COVID-19 pandemic, tuberculosis (TB) often gets relegated to the shadows despite being a formidable global health challenge. Important to note: TB vs. COVID-19: Surprisingly, TB ranks as the second leading infectious killer worldwide, trumping even HIV/AIDS. While COVID-19 rightly dominates headlines, TB quietly continues its deadly march, affecting millions globally. The Magnitude of TB: Shockingly, in 2022 alone, an estimated 10.6 million people fell ill with TB, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat this ancient disease. These numbers paint a stark reality of the enduring TB burden across demographics. Facing Resistance: Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) poses a particularly daunting challenge, remaining a persistent public health crisis and a threat to global health security. Sadly, only a fraction of those afflicted with drug-resistant TB can access treatment, highlighting glaring gaps in healthcare systems. A Ray of Hope: Despite the grim statistics, global efforts against TB have yielded significant victories. Since 2000, these concerted efforts have saved an estimated 75 million lives, showcasing the impact of collective action and investment in TB control programs.#EndTB #TBResearch #COVID19Research

Today on #WorldTBDay, we stand united in the fight against #tuberculosis, a disease that continues to claim far too many lives worldwide. With 1.3 million deaths in 2022 alone, including 167,000 individuals living with HIV, TB remains the second-leading infectious killer globally, surpassing even HIV/AIDS. Despite being preventable and curable, #TB continues to affect millions, with an estimated 10.6 million new cases reported in 2022, spanning across all countries and age groups. Let us reaffirm our commitment to combating tuberculosis, ensuring access to quality care, and ultimately saving lives. Together, we can overcome this global health challenge and create a healthier, TB-free world for generations to come. #yeswecanendtb #endtb

Pakistan being one of the eight nations that accounts for two-thirds of all new cases of developing TB. TB has long been an endemic disease in Pakistan.Reactivation of latent cases with HIV surge and potential Co-infection is just another challenge enough to shatter the system. The impact of diseases like HIV and tuberculosis can cause substantial damage to healthcare systems, overwhelming medical facilities, straining resources, and requiring extensive efforts in prevention, treatment, and support services. A little insight over the issue in my recent article. Read up: https://lnkd.in/dJFRpYdp

Did you know that voluntary male circumcision (MC) has been shown to decrease the rates of viral transmission of STIs? Studies have shown that MC can protect against HIV, human papillomavirus, and the herpes simplex virus type 2. In fact, major health bodies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have endorsed offering male circumcision because it can reduce a male's chances of acquiring HIV by 50-60%. Learn more about how Touchstone can assist circumcision with the CCplus Circumcision Stapler by visiting http://www.touchstone.hk/ References https://bit.ly/3IPQhId https://bit.ly/41IwjHH http://bit.ly/3ETlOYC

Nerd thought: - Did HIV make a "mistake" in Non-natural hosts (Humans) compared to SIV in Natural hosts (African green monkeys)? - Digging the holes in the GI mucosa initially soon after infection may have been a "miscalculation" since it accelerates the aging of the host decreasing the "persistence" of Lentivirus. - "Collateral damage" is not cost-effective from an evolutionary perspective.

Today is #WorldTBDay, a day to raise awareness about the devastating health, social, and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and to increase efforts to end TB around the world. For over three decades, PIH has battled this disease by treating and preventing TB, its more severe, drug-resistant variants, and co-infections of HIV and TB in some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the world. This past year: 🔸 We provided TB care in nine countries. 🔸 Performed 36,339 tests to screen patients with suspected TB. 🔸 Successfully achieved 84% of PIH-supported TB patients through a full course of treatment. Check out the video to learn how we're battling TB 🫁. After, read more about our work: https://bit.ly/4a3xm8R

Today, we are pleased to raise information about tuberculosis deaths. Tuberculosis deaths are avoidable deaths! Even if it is curable and preventable, a total of 1.3 million people died from TB in 2022 (including 167,000 with HIV). An estimated 10.6 million fell ill with TB worldwide which includes 5.8 million men, 3.5 million women and 1.3 million children. Further, even if it is present in all countries and age groups, more than two-thirds of the global total is in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Nigeria and the Philippines. According to the Global Tuberculosis Report in 2023, people with HIV, under nutrition, diabetes, alcohol use and smoking are at a higher risk of falling ill.
