Did you know that today is National Stormwater Day? On November 16, 1990, the Federal Register announced the promulgation of the NPDES Phase I Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program to protect water quality. Since then, municipalities across the nation have dedicated time and effort to protect our local waterways from stormwater pollution. The water, trash, oil and dirt that washes into your stormwater drains often flows directly and untreated into our nearby lakes, rivers, and streams. By doing your part to prevent stormwater pollution, you can make a direct impact on our precious natural resources downstream. Remember, stormwater becomes stream water. Storm drainage is one of the important element where there is heavy rain.
Who cares about stormwater? Stormwater 101: did you know that polluted stormwater runoff is the number one cause of water quality degradation? Development replaces forests and fields (“pervious” surfaces) with buildings and pavement (“impervious” surfaces). When it rains, instead of soaking into the ground, rainwater runs off of driveways, rooftops, streets, and parking lots, carrying sediment, nutrients, oil, bacteria, and everything else with it. A 2,000 square foot house with a 400 square foot driveway can generate up to 1,500 gallons of stormwater in a one-inch rainfall. Now scale that to an entire neighborhood! Not to mention that massive commercial development down the street… Do you know where the storm drain inlets are located where you live, and where they lead? What actions can we take to help prevent potential pollutants from entering storm drains, and to soak up more rain where it falls before it becomes runoff? #stormwater #stormwaterrunoff #runoff #stormwatermanagement #stormwaterbmps #onlyraindownthedrain #pollution

Improving the design and management of both pervious and impervious surfaces can increase the quality of freshwater such as creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakes. The video shared below shows a neighborhood with manicured lawns dotted with a few trees/shrubs. Typical grass species preferred for lawns (blue grass (Poa pratensis)) have very shallow roots (the reason it needs to be irrigated so often!) Switching to alternative, deep rooted grasses (preferably native), or just letting the lawn grow a little taller will introduce more texture to slow the water down and reduce the flow of pollutants.

🌧️Instead of evaporating or absorbing into the soil, stormwater runoff enters our storm drain systems! This means any contaminants found on the ground will also lead into our drainage systems heading to the Chesapeake Bay. Remember to properly dispose of all trash and pet waste! Every day, approximately 450 billion liters of drinking water is lost from global water distribution networks because of aging and strained infrastructure. If just 30% of this lost water were saved, 800 million people could gain access to already treated drinking water. To draw attention to this global challenge and emphasize the urgency of action, December 4 was designated World Water Loss Day, since 2019, by the Water Loss Specialist Group of the International Water Association (IWA). In observance of World Water Loss Day, organized by the International Water Association, NordiTube is proud our products are utilized around the world as a solution to one of the most pressing global problems - access to drinking water. For 35+ years, #NordiTube has been your partner to combat aging, compromised potable, sewer, or storm water pipe infrastructure, and we are not stopping the flow now. #WorldWaterLossDay
