🎯The SBTi’s Standard Operating Procedure for Development of SBTi Standards defines the process for development, review and implementation of our standards. It must be followed before making changes to any of our standards. Approved in late 2023, it includes: ✅definition of the SBTi workplan by the Board; ✅research and drafting of standards by our Technical team; ✅public consultation to gather input from a balanced and diverse group of stakeholders; ✅review and approval by our independent Technical Council; and ✅consideration and adoption by the Board. 👉Learn more our Standard Operating Procedure, SBTi standards and governance in SBTi CEO Luiz Fernando do Amaral's latest blog: https://lnkd.in/esMa7caJ #SBTi #sciencebasedtargets #netzero #SBTiScaleup

Thats why We can't say "carbon offsets will be used to achieve SBTi targets" yet 👇 There is a 9 step procedure for SBTi to complete for it to become a standard, lots of consultations and draft papers. In case they increase the allowed use of offsets to achieve targets, it would probably be applicable to SBTi net zero targets; not SBTi near term targets. Currently there is only 1 company in Turkey whose SBTi net-zero target is approved. So, if you are wondering whether you can use offsets to achieve your SBTi targets: 1. First, you should wait until SBTi officially announce the new standards 2. You probably will need a well designed emission reduction plan prior to using offsets 3. You probably will need to have an SBTi net-zero target 4. You should probably start considering the difference between carbon removal and carbon avoidance offset projects Every system and standards change rapidly just like the climate 🤷♂️ We can only assume these until SBTi publishes the final standard.
