As we approach the United States Space Force's 5th Birthday, it's a good time to remember those who fought for its creation: Steve Kwast.
In August of 2018, the Pentagon was trying hard to walk back the President's order to move toward a Space Force. The Vice President had to come in to reprimand and "come over the top" with strong direction. While NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine lept to support the POTUS, Air Force & AFSPC leadership offered no such support.
In the dead silence, General Steve Kwast articulated the case for why space was important...a truly grand picture we still hope will one day be embraced by DAF and USSF leadership:
"I see a future in which space is no longer a distant frontier but rather a vibrant arena of exploration, manufacturing, trade, and prosperity. As this vibrant arena develops, the U.S. military will play an active role, defending commercial markets and private citizens, as is our duty and tradition...The commercial opportunities are simply staggering. Visionary investors see new markets across a variety of industries, to include space tourism, space-based wireless internet across the globe, space-based solar power, asteroid mining, and space-based manufacturing...As human development of space increases rapidly in the coming years, the U.S. military certainly understands and appreciates its expanded role. As a first step, the military recognizes that our reliance on space creates vulnerabilities that must be actively defended...Just as the Navy and Army have been involved in frontier development since our colonial days-opening new markets and infrastructure across the seas or across the American west-so too today’s U.S. military needs to be prepared for similar activity in space. The U.S. military can expect to be a frontier development service once again, establishing the cosmic equivalent of navigational aids, charts, lighthouses, dams, search and rescue services, forts, supply depots, and coaling stations."

Kwast continued to make the case for the future of space to the first-ever space concentration at AU (which would grow to become Space Force PME)

Though supported by prominent folks like Chairman Rogers, Former Speaker Gingrich, and Former CIA Director Woolsey, former SDIO director Cooper for CSO--instead, the Air Force would retire Kwast.

Kwast did not relent--he continued to argue for the urgency of an independent USSF:
