We were excited to welcome the United States Space Force Galaxy XII cohort to the Southern Launch! The team is travelling the world learning from different commercial space companies and Southern Launch was honoured to be a stop on their Australian itinerary. Thanks to our Regulatory Lead Eamon for sharing his in-depth knowledge of the space regulatory landscape in Australia with the team.

📃 🗣️ Speech of Eurospace President at 17th European Space Conference ASD-Eurospace President Marco Fuchs had the honour to address the audience of the 17th European Space Conference with a keynote speech this morning. In a nutshell: 🔹 There will be no serious defence capabilities in Europe without effective space-based capabilities under the control of European entities; 🔹 There cannot be European space-based capabilities without a solid European space industry; 🔹 There will be no such a space industrial base without a dedicated space industrial policy at European level. "Let us align our forces, let’s make sure we’re fully prepared!"

📃 November 2024 ESPI Director's Perspective This month’s Perspective focuses on the importance of an increased engagement of Europe with the globally growing eco-system of space, crucial to secure Europe’s future as a global space power. As part of such European effort, at IAC 2024 ESPI strengthened its European membership base, with POLSA Polska Agencja Kosmiczna | Polish Space Agency joining as its latest member, and increased its international engagement, in particular with Korean Academy of Space Security, CONAE and Brazilian Space Agency (AEB/MCTI). Together with other engagements at IAC, the congress provided an excellent stage for ESPI to fulfil its mandate to promote European space policy globally.

I am pleased to present the initial perspectives on a new European Space Strategy! 🚀 🛰️ It is the first step of many to understanding and confronting the myriad challenges that Europe faces. My work with various space agencies, governments and the private sector over the last few months indicates that there is commitment to increasing the competitiveness of the Space and Defense sector. This document outlines several weeks of hard work, organized by European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), with my colleagues the Heads of Space Agencies throughout Europe as well as the European Space Agency - ESA. More to come as this strategy is further developed! 🚀

I was honored to be a speaker at the 39th Space Symposium last week, and many thanks to my good friend and colleague Troy Thomas at Boston Consulting for sponsoring the panel. During the panel, I advocated for the USG to provide a pathway for on-orbit operational demonstrations of new space tech through a regular cadence of dedicated launches to showcase such capabilities. Such “innovation” launches would help address the issue of flight heritage, one of the biggest obstacles to getting new space tech adopted. A very large portion of the space innovation economy is locked out of paying for their own demonstrations due to costs, and nearly all USG R&D grant programs simply aren’t sufficient to both develop needed tech and pay for a launch to demo it. This deprives our space forces from seeing and choosing from the most cutting-edge emerging capabilities they could use. The non-space part of the DoD is rich in opportunities for innovation and experimentation in operationally relevant environments, and as such, enjoys a far more rapid uptake of new capabilities when compared to our forces in space. The US can never allow itself to be in a fair fight—we must always have a technological edge over our adversaries, particularly in space. Perhaps SPACEWERX can offer such a service to the appropriate performers as part of the SBIR program? #SPACEWERX #DIU #space #innovation #USSF #SDA #AFWERX

"We must do everything in our power to effectively utilize space, as it allows us to always know what is happening across all fronts at any given time." At the DefenseTech Summit, Tel Aviv, Avi Berger, Head of the Space Directorate at DDR&D, emphasized the critical role of space in modern warfare. "Space enables near real-time intelligence, ensuring the IDF can operate effectively across multiple fronts, some as far as 2,000 kilometers from Israel." Ensuring Longterm Sustainability of Space and Spectrum Hosted by the Space Data Association and the Satcoms Innovation Group (SIG) 🕰️ 14:35 📆 7th November 2024 📍 London, UK The SDA and Satcoms Innovation Group will co-host a discussion surrounding the importance of protecting space and spectrum. As the amount of objects in orbit continues to rise, space is becoming increasingly congested and contested. Ensuring longterm sustainability means ensuring both safety of flight and continued and protected use of spectrum. This session will explore the tools and processes already in place, as well as asking what more commercial and military operators need to do to ensure longterm sustainability in an increasingly complex environment.

Unified Europe is a priority! This week, at the European Space Conference in Brussels, we dived into the future of European industrial strategy. The inaugural flight of Ariane 6 in 2024 marks the return of autonomous access to space, highlighting the urgent need to unite our industrial strengths across both civil and defense programs. As Commissioner Kubilius stated, “there is no defense without space, and no space without industry”. To address Europe's challenges, he emphasized the needs of a “big-bang” in the space industry. Common thoughts on the necessity of effective cooperation and acknowledgment on the fact that if competition is essential for fostering innovation, it is crucial that it does not lead to fragmentation. An unified European industrial strategy will help leverage our collective strengths and enhance our competitiveness on a global market. A strict European preference regarding access to space must remain our guiding principle in building a strong, independent space sector. By reinforcing this, we can develop a model that allows us to launch and operate essential capacities efficiently to meet our needs. I would like to thank my fellow panelists: Catherine KAVVADA, Director for Secure and Connected Space at the European Commission, Massimiliano Salini, Member of the European Parliament, Marco Fuchs, CEO of OHB SE and JUAN TOMAS HERNANI, President of YEESS - Young European Enterprises Syndicate for Space, for our discussions. #EuropeanSpaceConf #Espace #Defense #Europe #Innovation #ArianeGroup #Ariane6
