Should it matter if an administrator uses Excel? The short answer is yes. The University of Hawaii estimates that 88% of spreadsheets contain >1% errors. And the impact could be huge. In 2012, a trader nicknamed the London Whale incurred $6.2 billion of Credit Default Swaps losses after making errors copying data across multiple spreadsheets. Yet apathy towards technology is commonplace. My advice. Ask how your services are being delivered. Are the calculations made using the blue-chip software touted in glossy marketing materials? Or is your work being done 'offline'? Industry code for spreadsheets. It might be the most important due diligence question you ask.
