    When does brilliant strategy border on gamesmanship and cheating? If it’s not illegal according to the rules, is it then just innovative and genius? Recently, China won Gold and Silver in the 1500m short track speed skating at the Youth Winter Olympic Games. Nothing too incredible but it was the way they did it that has stunned the sporting world. In short track events, competitors usually start slow and later speed up towards the end, but one of the Chinese skaters (Yang) decided pull away from the pack early. Nobody followed Yang and she quickly completed an entire lap to catch the field and joined the back of the pack. The other competitors continued on normally in the 13-and-a-half lap race and were seemingly unaware that they were a lap behind. When the referee rang the bell to notify Yang it was her final lap, the other skaters jostled for position and sped up to cross the 'finish' line - but they were all still one lap behind. Yang's compatriot Li continued on skating, realising that she had a lap to go, and went on to claim the silver medal. The attached TikTok analysis of the race has gained more than 20 million views.  Officially the account of the Olympic Games posted, “Now, THAT'S strategy!' It wasn’t illegal. It was just… different.     Why are junior Russian girls attempting more quad Salchows than quad Toes? One explanation is that stopping the skating motion is "easier" with a Salchow than a toe pick. Interestingly, they all use the same jump technique and preparation—it’s the latest trend! When quads first appeared, it was the quad Toe, a tricky jump requiring high technical skill.
