Did you know? People over 65 use more healthcare services and are responsible for nearly half of hospital admissions. However, there are only 7,300 board-certified geriatricians in the US, less than 1% of all physicians (representing 1 geriatrician for every 10,000 patients). Compare that to over 60,000 pediatricians in 2021. Research shows geriatricians can provide better care for older patients, leading to lower death rates, shorter hospital stays, and reduced costs. Only 41.5% of geriatric medicine fellowship positions were filled in late 2023. With the older population expected to grow by nearly 40% within the decade, coordinated care for our elders is more crucial than ever. #Healthcare #AgingPopulation #GeriatricCare

How Inadequate Training On Specific Women’s Health Issues And Poor Communication Lead To Medical Mistakes: Medical mistakes happen across all patient categories and in every medical specialization. However, a few factors have combined to make women’s healthcare – including but not limited to reproductive issues and maternity care – an especially common site for problems related to provider-patient communication. Gaps in medical knowledge arising out of the ways clinical trial participants have historically been selected have resulted in a “standard” understanding of human anatomy and physiology that often leaves out of account potentially important endocrinological and immunological differences between male and female bodies. Pediatricians at Boston Children's Hospital in 2007 created the "I-PASS" system for handing off cases: Outgoing doctor: [(I)llness severity] Outgoing doctor: [(P)atient summary] Outgoing doctor: [(A)ction list] Outgoing doctor: [(S)ituational awareness/contingency planning] Incoming doctor: [(S)ynthesis of what they just heard] By adhering to this rubric, the theory goes, doctors maintain the integrity of the outgoing practitioner's knowledge about the case. And in a study of over 3000 patient handoffs, the researchers observed a 47 percent reduction in adverse events with use of the I-PASS system. 47%!! Some formalism like I-PASS could be very useful in IT fields that involve lots of investigation and diagnosis, like #SRE, #CustomerSupport, #ITSupport, #Security, and #DBA. Dr. Barrie May has been delivering babies for 55 years, five years before Saddleback Medical Center even opened its doors. Today, he is the medical director of the OB Hospitalist Program at The Women’s Hospital at Saddleback Medical Center, helping deliver babies when the patient’s primary OB can’t get to the hospital, or another OB needs his support in the delivery room. Recently, Dr. May completed his 11,000th delivery – a rare feat in modern-day medicine. The distinction of an 11,000th delivery is important, as this number is the number of patients he’s delivered, not babies. The number doesn’t include multiples or births where we assisted another OB. “I count how many mothers I’ve delivered, as that is one birth. If a patient has twins, it’s only one birth. If I come in to assist another OB, I don’t consider that one of my deliveries,” says Dr. May. “If you combined all the babies that I’ve delivered and assisted on, it would be nearing 30,000 babies. Really agree with Dan Slimmon on this. Handover management in IT tends to be rather ad hoc. Establishing basic principles and protocols would really pay dividends and make transitions easier and more effective.
