More details are necessary for a fair comparison. AGM batteries provide close to rated capacity out of the box, while flooded batteries traditionally "cycle up". If these tests were run on new batteries, this would explain why the flooded pack provided ~74% of the runtime of the AGM pack. After about three months of regular usage, the flooded batteries should provide ~30% more runtime and stay there for longer. AGM batteries typically perform their best on day 1 and walk down from there. Machine manufacturers often restrict machines powered by AGM batteries to more shallow depth of discharge (DoD) cycles to prolong battery life. In this test, it appears that the same machine was used for both the AGM and flooded pack tests. Testing these packs to the same cutoff voltage (likely a flooded setting based on the machine) will provide a fair runtime comparison but will result in two very different life expectancies. In general, well maintained flooded batteries will give greater $/kWh throughput on AWP machines. This is achieved by lower upfront cost, more cycles spent near rated capacity, and longer total cycle life. AGM batteries are great for those customers looking to avoid maintenance, but they are not the most cost effective and highest performing lead battery solution...

It could cost $11 million to install a 2000-kW solid oxide fuel cell stack by 2025 and $8 million for a 2000-kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack. A recent study from Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping estimates SOFCs to cost around $5,500/kW and PEM fuel cells around $4,000/kW in 2025 - which represents a significant initial investment. These high price tags might hinder the installation of these fuel cells on ships in the near future, it finds. Replacement costs could also add a substantial cost burden. For example: based on a replacement cycle of four years, the replacement cost for a 2000-kW PEM fuel cell system in 2035 could reach $800,000. "It appears unrealistic to assume that fuel cells will compete with or entirely replace onboard internal combustion engines in the near future," the study claims. Instead, it suggests that fuel cells should be used to power vessel's auxiliary operations rather than primary propulsion. Do you agree? Or do you think fuel cells can replace onboard internal combustion engines in the near future? Full coverage on ENGINE 👉
