Summer weather brings summer storms. Be prepared for severe storms and tornadoes this season by monitoring weather conditions and knowing what steps to take to stay safe. “Watches” alert you about weather conditions that are favourable for a storm or severe weather, which could cause safety concerns. As certainty increases about the path and strength of a storm system, a watch may be upgraded to a “Warning”, which is an urgent message that severe weather is either occurring or will occur. As we head through late April and into May, we approach the peak severe storm season across the US Southern Plains. This year is set to kick off with an active start with the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) forecasting several rounds of severe storms this weekend. Our preferred analogues for May point towards a mean pattern featuring low pressure across the Rockies and high pressure across the US E/SE. This pattern is similar to the active storm seasons of May 2019, 2013 and 2010. This leads us to believe May 2024 is likely to be an active severe storm month for the Southern Plains with an elevated risk of tornadoes, hail and flooding.
