"Elon Musk"__ says that the most likely scenario is that AI and robots will eventually replace almost all human labor, but he assures us that it’s probably a good thing. Musk spoke remotely during an interview at the Viva Technology 2024 event in Paris. He said a benign outcome where AI doesn’t destroy humanity is the most likely outcome, offering odds of 80% of this happening. He said that the natural progression would be that AI and robots would become so advanced that eventually, “Probably none of us will have a job.” In this utopic scenario, Musk says that we won’t simply have a universal basic income. Musk expects that governments would provide citizens with a universal high income. Musk said that in the long term, advancements in AI and robotics will mean that “any job a person is doing would be optional” and would be more of a hobby than out of necessity. “But otherwise, AI and the robots will provide any goods and services that you want,” he added. What is my purpose? While that may sound good, he said that in a future where humans no longer need to work we’ll be faced with some existential questions. “If the computer and robot can do everything better than you, then does your life have meaning?” Musk mused. Musk says that as humans, our contribution to society may be to provide meaning, or purpose to AI. He explained that in our brains, the cortex is responsible for thinking and planning, while the limbic system is responsible for feelings and instinct. The cortex is always trying to make the limbic system happy. In a future where AI takes over the thinking and planning roles, it might also assume the role of making the human limbic system happy. Human happiness could be what gives AI meaning and purpose. Neuralink Musk also spoke about his Neuralink project, which has had impressive results along with a few snags with its first human test subject. He explained that the ultimate goal of Neuralink is to have it evolve into a high-bandwidth interface to “mitigate the risk of digital superintelligence.” Musk sees the comparatively slow rate of human communication as a challenge to keeping a future AI superintelligence aligned. If AI and robots will be doing all the work for us, Musk sees Neuralink as a way to speed up the way we communicate with them by orders of magnitude. He didn’t offer a timeline on when we would be able to kick back and let the robots do our jobs for us but he’s mostly sure that it will work out to humanity’s benefit.

"In a benign scenario, probably none of us will have a job ... but, in that benign scenario, there will be universal high income, not universal basic income... There will be no shortage of goods and services. I think the benign scenario will be the most likely scenario, probably about 80% in my opinion. The question will not be lacking goods and services. Everyone will have access to goods and services as they would like. The question will be one of meaning. 𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧, 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? ... That's really will be the question for the benign scenario... So, I do think that long term, in a benign scenario, any job that some somebody does will be optional. If you want to do a job that's kind of like a hobby, you do a job but, otherwise, the AI and the robots will provide any goods and services that you want." Now the bold claim from Elon Musk is, “AI will probably be smarter than any single human next year. By 2029, AI is probably smarter than all humans combined.” at the back of a recent interview of futurist Ray Kurzweil. The word to note is “probably”. Here are few things from a long list of human capabilities that AI is yet to demonstrate: MUTI MODALITY – AI is yet to be able to process all human sensory information. It could process photos, videos, text, sound to varying level of success. But not all. For example, it cannot process smell the way humans could, e.g. in sensing rotten food. CONTEXT – Even when AI could process human sensory information, it still has a long way to go to make sense of all them put together in a given context. A sunny day, smoke in the air, and mouthwatering smell are perceived by human brain as signs of a happy time ahead, even when we don’t see the barbeque. AI can’t do that yet. EFFICIENCY – Current AI architecture, despite having pre-trained models and cloud infra, is still relying on massive brute force, energy guzzling computing, as compared to human brain which only consumes 10-12 watt like a domestic LED light. Even a humble laptop consumes 5x of that. You agree? Disagree? Don’t care? Share your comments. #ArtificialIntelligence #ElonMusk

Musk envisions a future where AI and automation could make jobs “optional,” suggesting a significant shift towards a society that relies heavily on automated services. This scenario, he proposes, might require a “universal high income” rather than just a basic one, to sustain livelihoods when traditional work becomes a choice rather than a necessity. Musk’s vision draws inspiration from Ian Banks’ “Culture Book Series,” where a utopian AI-led society flourishes. But it also poses an existential question: What is our purpose in a world where work is no longer our primary activity? As we honor those who served to protect our past and present, let’s also think about the kind of future we want to shape. Food for thought as we head into Memorial Day. What are your thoughts on this future? #MemorialWeekend #FutureOfWork #AIInsights
