In celebration of Black History Month, IREM NYC decided to highlight some of our members. Meet Duane Penister MBA. Duane has been in the real estate industry for 20 years. For the past 12 years he’s operated independently as the broker/owner of DePenn Realty. Duane became involved in property management when he noticed that many of his clients were acquiring properties unintentionally–typically through marriage, divorce or inheritance. He wanted to provide options to maintain those properties and start to build wealth by growing his client’s real estate investment portfolios. Now celebrating four years in residential property management, DePenn Realty serves both new and seasoned property investors with a focus on single family and small multi-family (mostly 2-10 unit) properties in the Rockland and Westchester Counties. Currently a CPM® Candidate, Duane commented, "IREM provides me with a well-rounded education in property and asset management. So I've completed two of the required courses—“Marketing and Leasing Strategies for Investment Properties” and “Managing Maintenance Operations and Property Risk”. I was immediately able to incorporate knowledge obtained from the coursework into my company by improving our leasing plan. We are currently updating our maintenance program, and will finalize and introduce a risk management program to our clients." In regard to DEI and Black History Month he went on to say, "The impact and importance of DEI is invaluable. I have been shown potential strategies to employ upon recognizing unfortunate situations. Such strategies provide an approach to build and sustain cultures that support diversity, equity inclusion, and belonging.
