🔴 NEW PUBLICATION 🔴 In the European Space Agency - ESA's efforts to increase its value for society and pave the way for a long-term ambition for #Europe in #space, the Agenda 2025 has identified the ESA #transformation as a key priority. 📡 🚀 🛰️ Part of the “transformation” of ESA is of course of direct interest for the European space industry, represented by ASD-Eurospace, as it can impact our #competitiveness, in a context where we continue to rely on the (very small) open markets to be sustainable. 💡 Accelerating time to contract or reducing the number of procurement constraints that make proposal preparation expensive are as many needed improvements and recommendations that are gathered in our latest Position Paper “Streamlining industry’s ability to be more agile and competitive in an ESA context”, available below. I have had some success with writing responses to ESA which has resulted in funding. In my experience, ESA has a very robust process and looks for innovations which make best use of civil space assets. https://navisp.esa.int/ "ESA’s Navigation Innovation and Support Program (NAVISP) is a key enabler for innovation and competitiveness and a strategic Tool of ESA to support and develop the overall European POSITIONING, NAVIGATION and TIMING (PNT) landscape. PNT data plays an increasingly important role in our society from increasing connectiveness to automating processes. The main NAVISP objective is to facilitate and support the generation of innovative propositions that go beyond the exclusive use of satellite navigation signals and data and include the development of competitive industrial capabilities and the development of new, innovative technologies to complement, upgrade or replace current PNT technologies. The NAVISP programme is structured according to three Elements that complement each other and contribute to the above programme objectives: Element 1: Innovation NAVISP Element 1 aims to develop innovative concepts, techniques, technologies, and systems related to the PNT sector along the entire value chain. The activities under Element 1 are fully funded by ESA.   Element 2: Competitiveness NAVISP Element 2 aims to maintain and improve the capabilities and competitiveness of the participating States' industry in the global market for satellite navigation and, more broadly, PNT technologies and services. As this Element of NAVISP is to support industry initiatives, activities are co-funded between ESA and industry.   Element 3: Support to Member States NAVISP Element 3 aims to support national PNT strategies by providing support per country and possibly per domain for the development and promotion of products, applications and services based on GNSS and, more broadly, PNT systems to foster national and international cooperation. European Space Agency - ESA decided to embrace a competition-based model. This is great. Still, there are some other decisions that must be made to improve the agency: - Get more funding from private investors. - Invite new European countries. - Strengthen relationships with non-European countries.

This geo-return debate is turning into a "for" or "against" ESA, which is not helping. Few facts need to be highlighted: 1- ESRO which became later ESA stands for European Space Research Organisation, and its mission was to develop a european space industry. There the geo-return made sense simply because except in UK and France there was no space industry. 2- ESA later developped into the Agency for countries which did not have an agency and the political games started to infiltrate ESA management down to A4 level as some countries requested to have georeturn within ESA Staff and keeping a detail account of how many A4-A5-A6 and Directors were from each country. Still ESA managed to keep the political games out of some areas and managed to run very successful science and earth observation programmes for which there was no national pride issue and theses programme had a lot of technological developments risks, covered by ESA cost plus contracts agreed by ESA delegations. 3- the issue today is so called "New Space" which is essentially driven by risk taking for future profitability to private investors. To support this model "New Space" needs cheap launch else the €€ books will not balance. Everybody and his sister claim that he can build a cheaper launcher than Ariane 6 IF he can ignore all rules including georeturn, BUT still get funded by ESA or other public source! (note that if and but are in capital letter). That is were the georeturn debate get corrupted, New Space wants the butter and the money of the butter! ESA and its georeturn can still exist to develop technology science, earth observation, etc, and even moon exploration as nobody sees short term profitability in them. ESA shall stay clear of "New Space" and leave it to real private investors.

🛰️HummingSat: a new chapter in space innovation unveiled   On 16 November, a new contract between the European Space Agency - ESA and Swissto12 has been signed that will see the range of satellites move into full development and qualification of this new product line. The signature took place at ESA Headquarters in Paris and in the presence of delegations from ESA Member States.   The HummingSat satellites - which take their name from the small and agile, yet seemingly stationary, hummingbird - are developed under the ARTES Partnership Projects programme, an initiative where ESA provides valuable support for developing space systems from start up to in-orbit validation. The HummingSat Partnership Project is supported by Austria, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.   A single HummingSat satellite has roughly the dimensions of an industrial washing machine, making it much smaller than a standard geostationary satellite and therefore more affordable to build and launch. SWISSto12's innovative 3D-printing technology will help boost the payload performance, streamline the manufacturing process, reduce the build time and cost of production.   “The HummingSat Partnership Project is a trend setter for ESA. We are working hand-in-hand with SWISSto12, a dynamic and successful company in the private space industry, leading a European consortium," said Javier Benedicto, Acting Director of Connectivity and Secure Communications at ESA. "SWISSto12 has developed into a new satellite prime contractor and set up a European supply chain. Just concluded an extraordinary experience at the ESA Education Training and Learning Facility in ESEC-Galaxia, for the fourth edition of the ESA Clean Space Training Course. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn from ESA experts and collaborate with fellow students passionate about a sustainable space exploration. This incredible program provided a deep dive into the critical issue of space debris and the strategies being developed for a more sustainable future in space. Immensely thankful to #ESA Academy for this enriching opportunity, it has been an honour and a privilege. Moving forward, I am excited to channel this knowledge into contributing to the critical issue of space debris! 🌍🛰️   🚀 Key takeaways that resonated with me: ·        Zero Debris is not just a goal, it's a mission! By improving post-mission disposal, orbital clearance, and avoiding orbital break-ups, ESA aims to limit risks for future missions. The international guidelines and regulations on Space Debris Mitigation are crucial in achieving this. ·        Regulations are key! It was inspiring to see ESA leadership in this crucial area. Their commitment to achieving Zero Debris by 2030 through policy and technological advancements sets a strong example for the entire industry. ·        It's time to recognise orbital capacity as a finite resource. 🚀 STAM is the ESA Technology Broker for Italy managing the ESA Spark Funding Call aimed at supporting technological transfer projects addressing both spin-in (from non-space to space) and spin-off activities (from space to non-space).
