I was happy to share my views yesterday during a panel at the #ParisAirForum, together with some key representatives of the space sector. Organized by La La Tribune events, moderated by French journalist dominique gallois from Le Monde, the panel was about Europe’s answers to overseas huge competition. For sure, European space sector is being challenged by SpaceX growing momentum impacting the entire value chain: launcher companies, satellite manufacturers and operators. We have strong assets in #Europe. For example, at Thales Alenia Space, we are capable of providing multi layer solutions (LEO,MEO, GEO) including the latest technologies: quantum components, intersatellite optical links, 5G, without mentioning constellations and our flexible reprogrammable Space INSPIRE offer. Europe has also key flagship programs, recognized around the world, such as Copernicus for environmental monitoring, Galileo for satellite navigation. In the near future, we are confident Europe will have a secured sovereign telecommunications constellation, IRIS2. Europe has arguments in both civil and defense domains. With the return of high intensity conflicts, countries around the world are looking forward to having sovereign, robust and resilient defense capabilities; solutions that can resist against jamming, satellites that are cybersecured. We can offer these solutions at Thales Alenia Space. We can’t just copy paste the actual American model, that is not adapted to ours in Europe. For Europe to remain autonomous and competitive, it has now become urgent to create the equivalent of a verticalized system, agile and versatile, fully compatible with Europe’s stakes. That is the reason why I proposed to create a "European space new deal", where the risks are shared between institutions, space industry, operators and services providers. Breakthrough technology risks should be endorsed by institutions. Institutions can play a key role in launching and endorsing flagship programs such as IRIS2 that are catalyzers of the entire space value chain. The programmatic risks should be taken by the industry and market ones by operators and service providers. We also need to move on, proposing durable and sustainable solutions. Last week, 40 companies signed ESA chart for O debris. Thales Alenia Space is proud to be among the signatories. Yesterday in #Brussels, during the #EuropeanSpaceConf, Telespazio, as leader of an international consortium, has signed with the European Commission the contract for the "study on potential EU Earth Observation services for government use". I truly believe that this study will be a significant step for the non-dependence and #autonomy of the #EuropeanUnion and all member states. But there are also some aspects that I think are important. The first is, of course, the team, made up of world-class companies, providers, SMEs and start-ups, such as Leonardo, e-GEOS, GAF AG, Telespazio France, Thales Alenia Space, Airbus Defence and Space, GeoVille Information Systems and Data Processing GmbH Hisdesat Servicios Estratégicos and PwC France. Then the #userdriven approach, made possible by the experience of #Telespazio and #eGEOS, as well as partners and subcontractors, all of whom have a long-standing relationship with the European D&I community. Finally, the important value that this project, thanks to the many potential users, will bring to the entire European #SpaceEconomy, thereby fueling the growth and increasing the #resilience of the entire sector. Very interesting panel this morning facilitated by dominique gallois at #ParisAirForum on Europe's answers to Starlink/SpaceX effects. Europe has robust and resilient technological #satellite assets, recognized globally in both civil and defense sectors to face threats and support #sovereignty needs. Furthermore, #Europe is engaged in the front seat to ensure a sustainable space. But all this is not enough to maintain its competitiveness and spatial autonomy in the future. Our company's CEO Herve DERREY underlined that in the current fast-evolving space context and at the light of the growing geopolitical threats, it is necessary to keep up with the acceleration of #innovations and of the #technological pace, to adapt and to create the equivalent of a verticalized, agile and versatile system, adapted to the strengths of Europe: "Let’s not be tempted by a copy/paste of the American space model. Europe can seize the challenges through its own way. Positive impacts would roll out from creating a new European space approach based on a risk sharing between institutions, industry and operators" #WeCanDoitTogether #Europe Thales Alenia Space

A few weeks ago our partner, Centre National d'Études Spatiales, the French Space Agency, traveled to Los Angeles to attend the Ground Systems Architecture Workshop. This year's theme was "Leaping into new space: how to leverage and integrate with traditional aerospace" where they presented the Return Link Service Test Bed (RTB) demonstrator platform and web applications for new Search and Rescue (SAR) Galileo services. After providing a global explanation of SAR Galileo Return Link Service (RLS) and the Return Link Service Provider (RLSP), they described the architecture of the RTB and highlighted the efficiency of its development in AGILE methodology to swiftly obtain a virtualised, scalable, and secured pre-operational platform in order to support demonstrations of new Galileo services such as EWSS (Emergency Warning Satellite Service). In addition, the worldwide efficiency of RLS monitoring thanks to REGINA stations (a CNES-IGN worldwide network of GNSS receivers) was also presented. This monitoring is necessary because new Galileo services are based on the RLS provision on a global scale. Finally, the objectives of both STELLAR and AWARE projects were detailed, which both allow for the consolidation of the EWSS concepts through various demonstrations. The role of CNES in both projects was also highlighted, as they are the future operator of the EWSS service center by hosting and operating the RLSP and the RTP. #AWAREeuproject #GalileoEWSS #HorizonEU #SARGalileo

Did you know that each day, every European relies on 40 satellites for navigation, communication, weather updates, and entertainment? At the #EuropeanSpaceConf today, I stressed that as space takes centre stage in our daily lives, securing European sovereignty in space is non-negotiable. . Europe has demonstrated that it has what it takes to deliver the world’s largest environment programme #Copernicus and pinpoint navigation with #Galileo. . It’s absolutely right that European flagship programmes be our next enabler but how we deliver space is the key question. . Europe needs to make long term strategic choices. Europeans want strategic autonomy but lack a common and coherent industrial policy or long-term budget visibility to achieve it. . To be disruptive in Europe we need all industry competencies - from the biggest to the smallest - to come together and stop fragmentation in the face of verticalisation from global competition.
