The German Aerospace Center (DLR) (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V.) Institute of Flight Guidance has just issued the DLR Blueprint - Initial ConOps of U-Space Flight Rules (UFR). The Blueprint was created to help standardise regulations for U-Space airspace users and to harmonise them with today’s flight rules and Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. The document proposes an initial Concept of Operations (ConOps) to enable a uniform flight rule framework for all crewed and uncrewed airspace users in U-Space airspaces which will be known as U-Space Flight Rules (UFR). The Blueprint has been created as a living document that can be updated regularly. The DLR-FL encourages the UAS community to submit comments and feedback via email. Avionics testing at the edge of control As the boundaries of what is possible are pushed in the aerospace sector, engineers are faced with an intractable problem – how to stay in control. Flight control systems are fundamental to all types of air and space vehicles, so the testing of controls is one of the most important aspects of flight testing. A spacecraft at the Moon or an aircraft traveling at hypersonic speeds of Mach 5+ is of limited use if it cannot be controlled. U. S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) is planning a set of exercises aimed at filling key gaps in its ability to detect and track drone threats in the Middle East. Amid a sharp increase in one-way drone attacks on U.S. and allied forces by Iraq, Syria and Houthi rebels, CENTCOM is working with the Pentagon’s chief digital and AI office to identify sensors that can detect adversary systems and be integrated into a command and control framework. Earlier this month, the command’s innovation team solicited proposals from industry for the effort, dubbed Desert Guardian. An innovation officer at CENTCOM, said the innovation team will choose sensors this summer to participate in a U.S.-based exercise in October focused on spotting UAS threats. Early next year, it will stage a second exercise — this one at a base in the Middle East — focused on integrating those sensors into a single interface used by operators in the field. The command’s innovation office regularly runs technology sprints to identify operator challenges and try to find solutions. [#IndustrySpotlight] 🚁🛩️ Summer is flying by fast and so is the progress on electric aircraft. Last week, we shared about our partner, Lilium, and their rapid advancements in advanced air mobility (AAM). In recent news, start-up ERC System announced they will develop an #eVTOL designed for emergency medical flights called Charlie, estimated to be three times faster than ambulances and more cost-effective than helicopters. More established agencies such as NASA have their researchers using a virtual reality flight simulator to explore passenger experience in eVTOL aircraft. These aerospace technologies will be making an impact in our communities soon. Our #aviation team has been working closely with industry leaders to support current technical requirements and future growth.
