The Air Force’s in-depth report to Congress says moving all National Guard space units to the Space Force is the best path forward. But the Air National Guard, governors in all 55 states and territories, and a bipartisan group of 85 lawmakers are pushing back against the Pentagon’s plan. The study that’s been in the works for quite some time examines three possible actions. It lays out the feasibility and advisability of giving the Space Force its own Guard component, leaving things as they currently are, and moving Guard space functions and personnel to the Space Force. The study examines each action's risks, costs, and benefits. 📰 From our ROA SmartBrief. 📖 https://bit.ly/3KiWJbE #SpaceForce #Guard #AirForce #NationalGuard

“China is a thinking, well-resourced adversary. They’re now thinking about the things we’ve said we’re going to do and how they’re going to defeat them. That’s why we have to re-optimize. We’re in a race. And we can’t just hope we win. We have to actually do things to make sure we stay ahead.” - Secretary of the United States Air Force Frank Kendall III One of the things the Total Force must do is better leverage the Air Reserve Component including the Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve. A recent RAND study demonstrated the experience and cost advantage of the Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve fighter and tanker fleets. If we are headed for a smaller, more capable United States Air Force, step one must be better leveraging the reserve component. SECAF's initiative to Optimize the Total Force is critical and timely; can't wait to see what is unveiled at the Air & Space Forces Association conference on February 12th. #strategy #natsec #nationalsecurity #airforce #nationalguard #TFO #totalforceoptimization #goguard

A vision for the new Space Futures Command is beginning to take shape: according to Breaking Defense, the new command will consist of "a Concepts and Technologies Center, a Wargaming Center and the [existing]Space Warfighting and Analysis Center (SWAC)". Lt. Gen. Shawn Bratton has assembled a task force to determine the command's requirements and flesh out other details. What do you expect from Space Futures Command? Will its structure take after the Army Futures Command? https://lnkd.in/ggCx9QjV

Space Force establishes Space Futures Command United States Space Force will establish a Space Futures Command to develop concepts and conduct experimentation. Similar to the Army Futures Command which was established in 2018, Space Futures Command is meant to answer long-term questions, such as what technologies should be developed or acquired to defend space. Space Futures Command is poised to wield significant influence in shaping the trajectory of #spaceinnovation and the pivotal role #venturecapital and #privateequity will play in this regard.

🚨🚨When someone tells you an issue is getting more attention than it deserves...you should pay attention🚨🚨 He's right. Governors don't need space assets. They also don't need F-16s, HIMARS launchers, Abrams tanks, Special Forces units, or infantry capabilities. The National Guard's role in American national defense is not domestic operations, it's as America's primary combat ready reserve. This mischaracterization of the National Guard is exactly that, a mischaracterization. The argument made here about space missions could be extended to the vast majority of missions in the National Guard. Legislative Proposal 480 sets a dangerous precedent that Governors shouldn't have authority over their own National Guards. So where does this narrative end? With states not having any part in their own national defense. Let's stop this legislation and get back to empowering our National Guard servicemembers.

Thought-provoking article concerning how today's conflicts influence and reinforce the central ideas behind the USMC's Force Design 2030. The critics would be wise to read an excerpt from the USA's 2005 Army Campaign Plan, which reflected its thinking before OIF consumed its attention: "Being expeditionary is far less about deployability than about operational and tactical agility, including the ability to reach routinely beyond organic capabilities for required effects [emphasis added]. If, in the process, the Army can leverage our sister services’ mobility, reach, and lethality to satisfy some of those mission requirements, all the better. To achieve that, we must expand our view of Army force design to encompass the entire range of available joint capabilities. [emphasis added]" There are no sacred cows. Time-phased and domain-federated operational approaches in armed conflict are predictable. Joint Force design doesn't exist. Perhaps it should.

As the character of war rapidly evolves, the Army must maintain its dominance in close quarters combat and its ability to harness new and emerging technology, Gen. "The Space Force is going to lose technical expertise that they've built over years." - Lt. Col. Andrew Gold, Colorado Air National Guard. I was honored to have the opportunity to speak with Lt. Col. Gold about Legislative Proposal 480. He learned about the legislation, which would transfer National Guard space units into the Space Force, whilst deployed in Africa, commanding the 138th Electromagnetic Warfare Squadron. Often, stories on legislation focus solely on political machinations and costs (money, readiness, personnel), without actually hearing from the men and women whose military careers and lives will be affected, how they will be impacted, and what choices they may make. Lt. Col. Gold is just one person, but according to the National Guard Bureau, upwards of 80 percent of of the men and women who constitute Air National Guard space units, feel similarly. If you are interested in this story, I suggest also listening to this 2024 Defense Media Award Finalist for Best National Security Space Submission - "Space Power: Why States, National Guard Association Say “No!” To Defense Department Space Units Plan." It's a discussion recorded in May about the nuts and bolts of the legislation. You can find that episode here or most places where you listen to podcasts: https://lnkd.in/e4j7zUC7
Space Power: A National Guardsman’s View On Why A Pentagon Plan Is A “Lose-Lose Proposal” Last week Air Force Gen. Steven Nordhaus assumed responsibility as the 30th Chief of the National Guard Bureau, inheriting a politically thorny issue: a piece of legislation that, if passed into law, would transfer Air National Guard #space units into the United States Space Force. This episode is about why some, possibly upwards of 80 percent, of the men and women who make up these units will not join the Space Force, which could leave the branch short of some critical capabilities. Laura Winter speaks with Lt. Col. Andrew Gold, Director of Strategic Plans, Colorado Air National Guard, and a space operator, who recently finished a deployment to Africa commanding the 138th Electromagnetic Warfare Squadron.
