Some context for my quote in Business Insider on China's plans to develop its power in space: Xi Jinping hosted a military ceremony in Beijing on April 19 to inaugurate several new “arms” – namely the Aerospace Force, Cyberspace Force, and the Information Support Force – to replace the old PLA Strategic Support Force (SSF), which had amalgamated the military’s cyber, space, and information warfare capabilities. The main motivation for the restructuring is to increase resources to each arm to enable them to specialize, and make them more directly accountable to central command. Reports suggested that the old SSF had an overly expansive mandate and was spread too thin. After the restructuring, the PLA’s cyber, space, and information forces will answer directly to the Central Military Commission instead of through the now-defunct SSF. It is part of an ongoing effort to modernize the PLA to prepare for conflicts in the 21st century, as China’s leadership believes elements such as space and cyber will play a bigger role, and that making them more operationally efficient is crucial to preparedness and success. China is not afraid to learn from military reforms in other countries, such as the US, and adapt to improve the PLA’s effectiveness. It is possible that the new aerospace force was inspired by the creation of the US space force under Trump. China’s last reorganization of its military regions into theaters in 2016 was also likely inspired by the combatant command system of the US military. Institutional reorganization is simply the first step; the real challenge lies ahead as personnel will need time to familiarize themselves with the new structures to be operationally effective. The party will also have to ensure that new resources allocated to these new military institutions are not squandered. The worst-case scenario for Xi would be for these newly minted forces to become mired in corruption and graft, as was the case with the rocket force that resulted in an anti-corruption purge last year
Is the US at risk of losing its status as the world’s dominant space power? Our expert Dominic Chiu says that plans for space warfare were at the heart of China’s recent military reorganization and mirror the US’ creation of a Space Force under former President Trump. Tom Porter
China's plan to be the dominant power in space is moving at breathtaking speed. The US needs to wake up, officials say.

Many thanks to Payload and Crowell & Moring for hosting Space Capitol 2. Great opportunity for the emerging space sector to network and gain access to decision-makers and vice versa! Thoughtful discussions on overclassification, educating the public on the importance of space in their lives, and efforts to stand-up a Space Force National Guard (Appreciate the opportunity to speak with Payload co-founder Mo Islam) #space #spaceinnovation #spaceeconomy #spaceindustry #defenseinnovation #defensetechnology #defenseindustry United States Space Force National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) Space Systems Command Space Operations Command United States Air Force United States Department of Defense National Security Space Association (NSSA) Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) National Security Innovation Capital NSIN - National Security Innovation Network Rios Partners

Donald #Psychopath Trump's anti-China policies vainly antagonized China. Donald #Psychopath Trump must take necessary responsibility for this. If US continues to suffocate China's economy, it will eventually repeat the failure of WW2. And, Japanese businesses such as Toyota, Canon, Nippon Steel , etc. have long assisted China's evolution of manufacturing sector, which eventually enabled China's sophisticated capabilities at space development. Therefore, US should in the first place file series of lawsuits against such Japanese businesses demanding tens of trillions of dollars as reparation. Therefore, US institutions should immediately confiscate total assets of Nippon Steel ASAP. Short-sell Nippon Steel and confiscate its assets. This is the right measure that US should take.

Miniature satellite capabilities are something AUKUS could work well within, especially in the outback (especially in and around the 20°0′S regions) with decent infrastructure investment and development, and adding an important tier to future mutual defence possibilities.
Vice President, Space Force & Air Force Client Executive at CACI International Inc & Chief Growth Officer (CGO) of the Space Force Association (SFA)
If the 2024 budget the Space Force has proposed to Congress becomes a reality, it will pump some $4 billion into these satellite systems next year, about double the amount of previous years. After that, the agency is requesting about $5 billion annually through 2028, Bingen says. Congressional approval of this growing budget would be a sign of broad US government support for this new military strategy. Space Force Association

“Unlike their counterparts in the Air Force, who engage in training missions up in the sky, or Navy sailors who practice combat drills at sea, Space Force guardians don’t get to directly experience outer space. Their training, instead, is confined to the boundaries of classrooms and traditional simulators designed for repeated practice of a specific skill. While these established methods sufficed when military operators focused solely on satellite operations, the Space Force now shoulders a broader mandate. This includes safeguarding satellites from hostile actions, necessitating the adoption of more sophisticated training tools. “The new space domain is far different from the one I grew up with,” said Gen. Chance Saltzman, chief of U.S. space operations. “It has taken on the characteristics of a more dangerous and dynamic security environment,” he said last month at the Air & Space Forces Association’s annual conference. Satellites have to be protected from traditional threats like electronic jammers and also from cyberattacks and more destabilizing ground-launched missiles, on-orbit grapplers and directed energy weapons.” #ai #emergingtech #spacetech #defensetech #space #spaceforce #security https://lnkd.in/gbNKw7Jw

Let’s hope that the Intelligence Community gets fully onboard, seeing these USSF initiatives as an opportunity for enhanced support to warfighters. A truly cooperative effort versus more bureaucratic infighting is what’s right for the country and our allies. Strategic thinking and action here also allows the nation to optimize - and incentivize - the significant private investment in the sector.
“Under level one operations, firms would provide a minimum commitment of peacetime capabilities to the Defense Department. Level Two, which includes regional conflicts or a major crisis, would require a higher level of commercial services. In a level three wartime scenario, companies would be obligated to prioritize government needs over their other customers.” #commercialspace #geospatial #remotesensing Space Systems Command

OSINT - China "Frankly, China is moving at a breathtaking speed. Since 2018, China has more than tripled their on-orbit intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance satellites," Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, said here on Tuesday, during a talk at the 39th Space Symposium. "And with these systems, they've built a kill web over the Pacific Ocean to find, fix, track and, yes, target United States and allied military capabilities," he added. A "kill web," in case you were wondering, is "a dynamic network that seamlessly integrates intelligence and warfare capabilities across various domains, including land, sea, air, space and cyberspace," according to the U.S. Marine Corps. https://lnkd.in/eC_Y7CCB
