Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin completed its ninth human spaceflight by sending six paying passengers to suborbital space in its new Shepard capsule. Blue Origin is currently the only company offering a regular operational space tourism service, since Virgin Galactic paused flights to build new spaceships. But another company is developing its own near-space option: Space Perspective. Morgan L Brennan Brennan sits down with Space Perspective CEO Michael Savage for the latest episode of Manifest Space.

Nice developments in Europe and collaborations. Important for exploration, crewed missions but also future space missions with astrobiological topics to Moon, Mars and icy ocean worlds in the solar system.
My🌌✨ 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌊⚓ I’m proud to announce an original collaboration between the Portuguese Space Agency, ESA, and the Portuguese Navy that leverages submarines 🚢 as unique analogues for human spaceflight research. 🚀 Submarines provide an exceptional environment—isolated, confined, and operationally challenging—that mirrors the conditions astronauts face on missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The ongoing SubSea ISM mission, lasting 60 days 🕒, is an exciting opportunity to study human health 🧠💪, refine operational strategies ⚙️, and develop innovative solutions that will benefit both space exploration and life on Earth 🌍. This collaboration showcases the power of interdisciplinary partnerships 🧑🚀⚓, combining expertise from astronautics, marine science, and medicine to address challenges in extreme environments. Importantly, the insights gained extend beyond space, with applications for polar stations 🧊, military operations 🪖, and even clinical conditions like seasonal affective disorder 🌧️➡️🌞. 💬 As ESA’s Director of Human and Robotic Exploration, I believe these efforts are pivotal: "They deepen our understanding of extreme environments and play a crucial role in preparing the global space community for future missions to the Moon and Mars." Portugal 🇵🇹 is well positioned in this field, with its submarines 🚢 and terrestrial analogue sites in the Azores 🌋 and Madeira 🏝️, such as the Capelinhos Volcano and Barreiro da Faneca. These resources are invaluable for conducting cutting-edge space-related research and training. I’m particularly inspired by the shared vision of our partners, including Ricardo Conde, President of the Portuguese Space Agency, and Admiral Gouveia e Melo, Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Navy, whose teams have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to advancing our collective exploration goals. This initiative not only expands ESA’s research platforms but also strengthens Portugal’s role as a key player in the global space sector. Together, we are driving innovation 💡 and shaping the future of human spaceflight 🌌🚀.
