Chapter 34: President of FICCI; Championing the Cause of Industry Summary: SLK got the Padma Bhushan Award on 26th January 1965 for his outstanding performance in exports. Then he got too busy in his duty as President of FICCI. He discussed with higher-ups, many matters in favor of promoting economic growth in India and he was also in favor of logical thinking. He met the then Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri once in two months to discuss trade. Lal Bahadur Shastri was a good listener. After listening he used to ask for all the resources which supported the case made by SLK and assured him that he would investigate the matter. And as promised he used to investigate it. Lal Bahadur Shastri used to implement suggestions that he found relevant. Then Indira Gandhi succeeded Lal Bahadur Shastri and she knew Kirloskars well. She had memories attached to Kirloskarwadi. SLK’s main theme was that, given the right atmosphere, and the freedom to operate according to the logic of economic development, India’s industry and trade could make a substantial contribution to economic growth. Now several joint committees have been set up with foreign countries. As a part of foreigners' feedback, the company got to know that they were lacking in various factors like telephone services, lack of reliability on labor, and lack of trust that Indians might or might not meet their commitment. SLK tried to protect the pride of the country by giving some positive examples. But the reality was reality.   Learnings: 1.    When tons of work come to us, some of us give up and some of us persistently work day and night. SLK chose to work, day and night and that is why now he had a collection of amazing memories.
